cplmac Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 4lb BP w/Ti Blue star tail to ... damn turned the camera off to soon
Mumbles Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 qwezxc12, those firefly stars you have. Are they from the same batch as you made back in january?
qwezxc12 Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 qwezxc12, those firefly stars you have. Are they from the same batch as you made back in january? From this post?:12/22 post in aerial shells If so, then yes...I had around a lb. or so left of the dry mix and pressed up the remainder into 3/8" and 1/2" pumped stars. After my initial tepid reaction to the comp, I rather like it now...Even thought the falling snow obscures the first videos, the 1/2" stars from the 3" shell in Jan., vs. the 4" shell last time seem to hang about the same. I have yet to get them to work reliably as a rising effect, though...either they don't light or they don't take fire vigorously enough and are still burning during the break and zoom off amid the stars ruining the effect. Any reason?
cplmac Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 Try priming them, maybe a hot prime. http://images.kodakgallery.com/photos3344/1/20/5/39/34/7/734390520111_0_ALB.jpg FrankenRocket
al93535 Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Here are some vids of stuff I made and shot with Mumbles on friday night. If anyone wants details, ask here. I am just going to post vids, no pics or explanations. http://www.littlerockauctions101.com/alpyro/saluterocket.wmv http://www.littlerockauctions101.com/alpyro/beraqrocket.wmv http://www.littlerockauctions101.com/alpyr...hmulticolor.wmv http://www.littlerockauctions101.com/alpyr...amertocolor.wmv http://www.littlerockauctions101.com/alpyr...eredcrackle.wmv http://www.littlerockauctions101.com/alpyro/win22.wmv http://www.littlerockauctions101.com/alpyr...nchcanberaq.wmv
qwezxc12 Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Very nice! What was the steamer comp? Was it intended to be as dim as that, or is the relative brightness a camera artifact and the stars were actually brighter?...the tail looks extremely fine.
Tweetybird88 Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 I'm impressed with some of those. I have a couple of questions on them. What was the comet that you used on the first of the shells? How did you get the whistle effect on the rocket?
qwezxc12 Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 Here are two videos from this weekend's shoot: 3in D1 GlitterThe D1 was an experiment made with 5micron atomized instead of the 20-30mic usually used. The glitter looked nearly the same, perhaps a little more sparse? 4in Shmizu Blue150 to Luce ForteTrying another blue from the venerable Dr. Shimizu. Luce Forte is a very bright white, but kind of expensive with the large % of BaNO3 as the main oxidizer. Don't mind the car horns...I wasn't playing in traffic. Some 'friends of friends' came to watch and felt compelled to contribute to the event with their %&$#ing horns *every* shot Shell details on request if anyone wants 'em. There are more coming, including my first 6in shells and first 4in double petal break; I haven't converted the video, yet. I NEED a better camera...
cplmac Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 3lb BPwTi to report with green organic on the stick, dusk Really nice shells by the way!
Pretty green flame Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 3lb BPwTi to report with green organic on the stick, dusk Really nice shells by the way! Close proximity fireworks, nice, although a bit dangerous. I absolutely love the deep report, nice work.
cplmac Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Thanks, it wasn't supposed to be close proximatey, but the rocket made a slow B-line for me as soon as it meandered out of the tube.
Pretty green flame Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Anyway nice job, you seem to know your way around titanium salutes as they are absolutely amazing. I am tempted to try one myself. Do you use a special formula or bog standard 70/30. Also, how many % titanium do you use in the mix. Thanks
cplmac Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Actually I don't use Ti in the salute, just in the rocket motor. As for the salute mix, it's pretty much 70/30 with some other stuff added.
qwezxc12 Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Here are a few more from Saturday: 3in Starmine: TT w/Ti, D1 Glitter, FireFly#3Too little lift by far and the Tiger Tail w/Ti was a bad idea; very overfueled so it hit the ground (and trees) still burning. 2in Blue Ti Comet turned StarmineHere's what happens to a comet with either too little binder or not enough pressure used to consolidate it...instant starmine! 2in Yellow Ti Comet w/20g Ti SalutePretty much how it was supposed to go 2in D1 Comet w/50g Ti SaluteD1 didn't glitter much after the first 20 ft and turned into a flying ball of glowing slag (too much binder maybe) and the salute *may* have broken a just little low...just a little...ahem
cplmac Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Hah, I did the same thing you did with the blue comet, but I did it with a 2.5" gold glitter comet. Didn't let it dry long enough in my case.
Tweetybird88 Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I really liked the yellow comet. You're starmine was a great combonation of stars. I love the cars honking in the backround. Great work for the most part.
qwezxc12 Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Thank you for all the comments...I've converted two more videos from Saturday, both 4" spherical shells: 4in Luce Forte w/Ti with FF#3 pistilMy first double petal shell, inner petal was ~2" dia and the shell used a 3g 70:30 flash bag. It broke like crazy was was nice and loud...perfect for a Ti streamer, I think:http://www.apcforum.net/files/grab00245.jpg 4in Yellow Metallic PalmThis is my own formula for the yellow: it's semi-metal fueled with MgAl grinder run for crackles. It burns vigorously, almost self-propelling. The stars were thirteen 3/4" pumped comets for a palm break in the shell:http://www.apcforum.net/files/grab00270.jpg Hope you like 'em.
cplmac Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 Yeah no kidding blue squib, his shells are beautiful. The break symmetry is top drawer too. 2lb. Whistle with three 1.25" glitter comets on top 3lb. whistle on strobe tooling with 2.5" TT xette on top The Tiger Tail xette blew itself out, it was the last bang in the video I think.
qwezxc12 Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 I did like them, especially the yellow palm. Did you use NaClO3 in the comp or was NaNO3 enough to make that intense yellow? I would also like to know if you used any sodium components in the lift powder too, looks also very yellow in the vid.BlueSquib, cplmac, Thank you both for the complements! The Yellow Formula (which after some more tweaking I may submit) is: NaNO3 62C 12S 9Cryolite 9Al 8Coarse MgAl +10 I first skipped the Cryolite, but found its addition really 'warms' up the color. I chose to use a non-aqueous binder due to the hygroscopicity of the NaNO3. I first tried 5% RedGum with alcohol and that worked fine, but disintegrated when I tried to roll a water based comp onto the pumped cores. I now use 2-part Resorcinol Resin glue (from my trusty True Value) in the following ratios: Paraformaldehyde, Part A: 1% additionalResorcinol Resin, Part B: 8% additionalMeth Alcohol 4% additional Part A is the catalyst powder and is screened in with the dry mix. Part B is thinned with alcohol and mixed in to make the mix damp. I love this stuff because a 2" comet pumped with it is cured and ready to shoot the next day. So far I've used bright -350 flake...just because I have a ton and it's $4/lb. Atomized would really make this a little more enjoyable to mix No sodium in the lift...plain old BP there. It is a cheery color, though. I used KP on rice crispies this time around for the 3" and 4" shell break, boosted with either a 70:30 flashbag or granulated Pot Benz whistle catalyzed with 1% Copper OxiChloride and dumped into the center of the burst.
qwezxc12 Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 2lb. Whistle with three 1.25" glitter comets on top 3lb. whistle on strobe tooling with 2.5" TT xette on top The Tiger Tail xette blew itself out, it was the last bang in the video I think.cplmac, What made the glitter tail in the first rocket? Completely awesome. I like the second one tailing down. It looks like a meteorite when it finally breaks....
cplmac Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 The first rocket I hot glued three 1.25" glitter comets to the top of the rocket and ran a piece of quickmatch down to the nozzle, the glitter formula I have been tweaking for a few months now. The second rocket had a 2.5" Tiger Tail crossette on top. The crossette weighed a touch over 200 grams after it dried. I think it was the crossete breaking at the end, I broke it with the chlorate whistle which seems to be a bit to much.
