Potassiumchlorate Posted November 13, 2011 Posted November 13, 2011 Composition: red organic Bengal fire Creator: Hermann von Helmholtz Colour/effect: slowly burning red, a little bit towards orange. Composition by weight: Strontium nitrate 80Shellac 20 Incompabilities: none Preparation: bind by wetting the shellac with alcohol. The colour is surprisingly red, just a little hint of orange, despite the lack of chlorine. I got the inspiration to post this extremely simple composition from this thread. Shellac is always available, so if you just have strontium nitrate for red and no chlorine donor, you can still make a nice Bengal fire.
Potassiumchlorate Posted November 16, 2011 Author Posted November 16, 2011 Update: this does not look red in broad daylight. In broad daylight it looks orange. Strange phenomenon.
