pyrosailor99 Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Hi all! i would like to make Red stars (or red lances) i have many chems (also strontium nitrate, potassium perch, ... alu and and magals) i have also shellac and Parlon but i don't have any red gum. in any comp i found over internet Red Gum si required... is there a comp to make red stars and lances that use Strontium Carbonate (not nitrate) and avoid Red Gum??(for the real i have also strontium nitrate, but as a newbie in colored stars i want to avoid it as i know it is a bit poisonous, i will use it later when i will increase my experience) thanks

Potassiumchlorate Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 Since you have metallic fuels it would probably be possible to use shellac instead, in combination with those, but usually you use shellac only if you have potassium chlorate or, in rare cases, ammonium perchlorate. Potassium perchlorate, strontium carbonate and shellac will probably not burn at all.

californiapyro Posted October 23, 2011 Posted October 23, 2011 also, you sure you don't want to use strontium nitrate? i have a whole host of tried and true reds without red gum...
Arthur Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Red gum usually isn't hard to come by, so it may be good to buy some as it is very useful. However look here http://www.thegreenman.me.uk/pfp/db1.html and look for stars and there are a couple of reds listed without red gum. It's probably one of the better web based formularies at he moment.
pyrogenius007 Posted October 15, 2016 Posted October 15, 2016 Hi californiapyro, can potassium chlorate be used instead of perchlorate ?
pyrojig Posted October 17, 2016 Posted October 17, 2016 Shimizu and Hardt can provide chlorate formulas for Chlorate reds ? which are very easy to make , and I believe that Strontium Carb can be used .
braddsn Posted October 18, 2016 Posted October 18, 2016 Strontium nitrate is not toxic... or rather, not any more toxic than any other chemicals you use in pyro. Barium Nitrate (for green) is a little more toxic than most other chemicals, but still safe if you have a respirator. Strontium nitrate can be challenging to use if it is humid outside, because it is hygroscopic.. but on the other hand, the brightest and best red colors come from using Strontium Nitrate, in my opinion.
