guntoteninfadel Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Looking at some perc, do I need cab o seal? What is it anyway. Thanks
Mumbles Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Do you mean cab-o-sil? If so it is fumed silica. Extremely fine sand essentially. It's added to various things as a free-flowing agent, and as a thickener in some cases. You don't necessarily need it. It will keep your powder from clumping, but that is usually remedied by screening compositions anyway. Some like it, I personally would prefer clumpy Perchlorate. That way I know it's not adulterated.
californiapyro Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 i prefer to mill mine with cab-o-sil, just a personal preference. That way It's always easily manipulated. oh and it's awful stuff to work with, it goes EVERYWHERE. so, not necessary, but some like it.
guntoteninfadel Posted October 19, 2011 Author Posted October 19, 2011 Thanks that's what I needed to know
psyco_1322 Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 If you get a grade of KClO4 like HP-140, it has plenty of anti-cake in it already. Most perc that clumps up will return to dust after a single pass through a fine screen, which is usually pretty easy. Do remember that cab-o-sil is really bad for you to breath, it can lead to silicosis.
Mumbles Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Actually, silicosis is only caused by inhaled crystalline silica. Cab-o-sil is amorphous, and thus thus not nearly as dangerous. Diatomaceous earth also has a relatively low concentration of crystalline silica. You're in far more danger of developing silicosis from inhaling clay dust. This said, inhaling sufficient amounts of cab-o-sil or DE will still be irritating, but may not lead to the scarring and other damage to your lungs characterized by silicosis.
