fred815 Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Have a pile of what I thought was Black willow but turns out to be corkscrew willow?? (For obvious reasons - branches really have a corkscrew shape). QUESTION Any good for pyro Charcoal. Made some Bp fusing charcoal made from this willow. simple burn test SURE looked faster than on-line bought Airfloat. I know I know I probably answered my own question?? But anybody out there tried it/??
Seymour Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Within the willow family there is significant variation in charcoal burn speed. I know that tortured willow is not one of the super hot ones, and it does sound similar to corkscrew willow in growth shape, for what that counts. However, the lowering of quality could simply be on account of the tree having a higher proportion of twisted and semi knotty wood, and nice straight pieces (if any can be found) might be just as good. Overall, I suspect it may not be the very fastest willow, but I think it will still be a relatively well performing charcoal. I suggest you use it for BP, even if you have to use 10% more than if it were black willow.
PersonGuyDude Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 It is probably faster than airfloat, but it may not be the "best" charcoal.Personally, I would find a TON of decent quality wood to make charcoal with over the years. That way, your lift, burst, stars etc are consistent for quite a long time.
