lokys Posted October 14, 2011 Posted October 14, 2011 I think you need to work a lot for better result.. In my opinion: no symmetry, break is realy small and not powerfull (except salute).. Need to do some test before you are doing 7 shell's Do not be offended. good luck !
guntoteninfadel Posted October 15, 2011 Posted October 15, 2011 Need to do some test before you are doing 7 shell's Do not be offended. Did not realize there was a "quality level" to be attained before stringing some shells together for video. Would three shells per video be okay for his level of proficiency? or five? or what? Or, after re reading your post maybe you think he is shooting 7" diameter shells?!?! Really? I can see the confusion, 7" shells being so popular these days. Dont rain on his parade. With that one post he has put up more video than most. How does he have a chance to improve without vetting his work somewhere? anyways...... just my "be nice rant"

How does he have a chance to improve without vetting his work somewhere? anyways...... just my "be nice rant" There was 3'' and 4'', I know .. I just want to tell the true, look to all post's: ,,Nice shells.'', ,,nice shells!'' , they are not nice, if we will tell him this is nice shell's what gonna be in future,How he will grow ? ? I'm just telling my opinion: need to work a lot of for better result. I know we are not professionals and I was very proud when my first star has ignited when shell explodes But I am not going to be ,,brown nosse'' .. I just told my opinion. Ofcourse without test's you will never achieve somethink big, but you must have somethink ir your head before you doing somethink. I think your problem is to thin paste layer. There realy good post in ,,,passfire'' about layers and in Takeo Shimizu book :"Fireworks, the Art, Science and Technique." Good starting point before test, N = 5.6 D(cm)/J(kg/cm) . Read about that. It's really good information. Few questions: how many layers did you pasted on your 3'' shell's ? And what type of pasting did you used? how many flash powder did you used?
guntoteninfadel Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 lokys, all this rhetoric, where is your video?
lokys Posted October 16, 2011 Posted October 16, 2011 lokys, all this rhetoric, where is your video? This is not everything that I want from my shell's but I think I am going good way.. I am not working with pyro everyday, few times per year, because I am far way from my pyro stuff.. I am just reading a lot of about that, that's why I recomended these book's.
guntoteninfadel Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 ok loky, my general reply........ WoW man great shell! loky style reply..... dude flash is killing the colors on your break washing out the mains, the lopsided break really should be addressed as well as the inconsistant burn rates of your stars. looks to me like the top right quadrant is blowing some of them blind as well. Was that supposed to be petal in the middle, it was so insignificant i couldnt tell, dont be mad , just my opinion. opinions, are like butt holes, everybody has one and they all smell! I feel sure you see many more defects in you workmanship than I because for the most part everthing that I complained about does not bother me. I think its great you are are out there doing something. I hope you were trying to encourage but in your first response it sure didnt sound like it. ok, i have had enough of this. Im out!
thunderboy Posted October 18, 2011 Author Posted October 18, 2011 Electric firing, nice. YES TO ME THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO I JUST LOVE IT

SO I WILL TRY THOSEI HAVE ONLY LEARNED ABOUT HOW TO DO THIS BY THIS FORUM OR SKYLIGHTER. PLUS MOST THESE VIDS ARE TAKEN FROM A 100 FT AWAY FROM DISCHARGE.JUST AN OL TEXAS BOY HAVE N FUN.WHAT DO YOU USE FOR THE BEST SYMMETRY???????????

lokys Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 (edited) I've never used plastic hemispheres, I think they are not good, because paper is not hard and it can split hemiphere to many particles what can give better symmetry (I don't know what's about plastic shell's, but I heard from some guys, they are not wery happy of them). And look to pyro masters ,Chinese useing just paper shell's, japanese too.. I don't know maybe you can achieve somethink good with plastic, you should decide, but try paper shells, why not ..? What I use for the best symmetry ? I don't know, because my symmetry is not super. But I think if you are useing KNO3 burst (BP on rice hulls, or somethink else) you need a good booster, because 3'' of BP burst have no strenght(it's very small), you should add 2-3g of flash powder (i use Thunder flash powder) . Second thing is your pasted layers thickness , if you use KP burst or H3 it should be about 9-10 pasted layers of 40lb kraft paper(I used 70lb it's not good for 3'' but I am happy) (and ofcourse don't forget to make good wheat paste) , if you use BP burst it's shloud be same about 9 layers but you should add some booster. Stars should be same size. That's all for beggining. Try to do some shell test's. Do everything same but in first put 2g booster, in second 2.5g, other 3g. Do some experiment's with layers.. Every man should find hes golden mean! Without test's it's hard P.s. I am talking about 3'' . Good luck! We are waiting your new video's! Edited October 19, 2011 by lokys

DanielC Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 I USED HOMEMADE BP ON PUFFED RICE 4 TO 1 AND 2 GRAMS FLASH POWDER FOR BURST What type of booster are you using, and are you adding it directly to the bp burst? Is a flash bag neccesary for say perch/MgAl ?
VintageRacer Posted October 24, 2011 Posted October 24, 2011 Thanks for sharing Thunder, looks like you are on the path indeed . When you make you next plastic shell, try pasting it in with some gummed tape and that might help you some with the breaks. I'm overdue to shoot some things but am waiting and stocking up due to the burn ban here. DanB
thunderboy Posted October 24, 2011 Author Posted October 24, 2011 What type of booster are you using, and are you adding it directly to the bp burst? Is a flash bag neccesary for say perch/MgAl ? MY FLASH IS 70/30 OR PERCH AND DARK ALADDTO THE MIDDLE BEFORE CLOSING THE SHELL
DanielC Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 (edited) Well, I'm beginning to think there is no practical way to get consistent, symetrical breaks with the plastic shell casings. You can boost them and get a little better break, but still nothing to write home about. They are easy and fast to make, but the trash left behind and the funky breaks are getting old fast. I got some paper shell casings yesterday (trying small 3" first) but I can not find any tutorials on paper shells construction. I searched the forums here and Passfire. There must be a dozen tutorials on plastic shells. If anyone knows of a good link I would greatly appreciate it. I looked all over Skylighters project and newsletters and didn't find anything on the paper shells. I'm sure I could work it out easy enough myself, but I'd much rather do it right the first time. DanielC Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 (edited) daniel, just add 2.5 grams of flash powder just check my latest shells proves it work use that and tape it like skylighter said and you will be very happy. That is what I've been doing and the breaks are great but they are not symmetrical. I pasted up two paper shells tonight. One with gummed paper and one old school kraft and wheat paste. That was a mess. I'm not sure if I will be going that way at this time. I will try to post a pic. Its the first I've done. I'm going to shoot it tonight (gummed one the other is not dry enough) may have video tomorrow if it works ok. By the way I loved the glitter comp. I will be checking that one out soon. I only put in a single ring of stars on the parting line, but the break was very good. It was angled away from the camera a little when it broke. I may have fused it a little long. I need to build more and load the stars normally and check symmetry. Overall, I am very happy with the results. I just need to get faster at pasting the shells. Thats going to take some practice. DanielC Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Here is one of the shells from the other night. It is the first pasted shell I've done. Sorry about the audio I shot this one at the house and I was worried about scaring passers by. I was standing way back zoomed in and under a tree so branches obstructed the break a little bit.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNjIjR7ssL4&feature=player_profilepage
