50caliber Posted October 2, 2006 Posted October 2, 2006 Hi guys, I've been interested in pyrotechnics for about 4 years, manly just taking apart fireworks and slowly finding out what was in them. I live in New Zealand so its very hard to get hold of certain chemicals. I just purchased so KMNO4(called condies crystals used to darken horses coats) off and ebay like site for US$4.50 for 150grams. i was in a rush so i went and bought it and did some research on it and it is very unstable. This is the only pyrotechnic like chemical i can get a hold of at the moment. Could someone help me with a simple composition or a place i can get some chemicals. Thanks in advance
itwasntme Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 It depends, how old are you? If you are under 21, you'll need a parent to buy it, if not you can buy anything you want. Sometimes it will be 18. There's not much you can do with KMNO4, you can buy some glycerine and put some of your KMNO4(1 tablespoon) on a brick then put a half tea spoon of glycerine on top. It will ignite in about 10 seconds so get away. Reasearch it some more before you do it.
Mephistos Minion Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 There are some NZ pyros on the UKR forum, I talk to one regularly that has alot of chems. PM me your MSN messenger email and I will pass it on to him. He will be able to help you.
50caliber Posted October 3, 2006 Author Posted October 3, 2006 im 16 at the moment and have a firearms license so i can get black powder. i read somewhere you can use KMNO4 for flash powder but its the most unstable.
aquaman Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 You can make flash powder with KMnO4 and like you said it is very unstable. That is why not to many people use it. Since it sounds like you are just starting out I would suggest you stay away from any kind flash and start out on maybe a simple smoke comp. or something. The first chemicals to get your hands on is KNO3, charcoal, and sulfur. You can make alot of things from just these three: Smoke, Black powder, rockets, fountains, stars, etc...
50caliber Posted October 3, 2006 Author Posted October 3, 2006 yea i was thinking that aswell. and al powder is hard to get a hold of here, my only experience with flash is taking it out of these colourful wheel things
