h&k machineguns Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I need to come up with a flamable gell that I can ignite easly with nichrome wire. I need it to stay like a gell like material for 2 hours minumum,or forever soft and gooey .So far I've tried a few gun powders in vasoline and even my ball milled 75/15/10 Black powder and non of those worked. Last night I was the most successful with it ,by taking the course pyrodex black powder that I bought at a sportsmans werehouse earlier and mixing it BP to Vasoline at around 80/20. It ignited pretty easy, but doesn't always burn all of the pile I'm trying to ignite.I thought about just going down the isles at home depot looking for things that read highly flammable, that of course are past/silicone types that remane super soft/gell like. I remembered how great you guys have been in the past with some of my questions and figured I should come here firs for advice. Downfalls of the Valaline and BP is it's pretty messy, but if I can use it and it works 100%,I'm not going to complain. vasoline never dries up either. I even left the BP and Vasoline mix for 10 hours and it still worked. Because I know you guys will ask,What I'm trying to do, is to pack the opposite end of my rocket nozzles with this material to be flush with the edge of the cardboard tube and ignite it with a flatter looped piece of nichrome wire, causing it to burn up the nozzle and ignite my BP or Whisle inside the rocket. Thanks
delta_echo Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 So does it need its own oxidizer or not? If not, sterno is dirt cheap and lights easily. I can only imagine nichrome would ignite it.
optimus Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Why do you want to use a gel for this purpose? I use an igniter taped into a short piece of quickmatch which is directed into the nozzle for ignition of my larger motors - can't see why this wouldn't work for you, and it also ensures rapid, complete grain ignition. There are lots of methods for igniting motors, but I never heard of anyone using a gel.
joe609 Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Maybe some flammable filler with an oxidizer mixed into a slurry would probably take a while to dry and should burn sufficiently to get through the nozzle.
ActionTekJackson Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 ok, optimus' method is going to be the easiest way, the second probable way would be to merely use a nail and press some BP into the nozzle, then with your finger finish pressing the bp on top of the nozzle, now take a peice of tape and just tape your igniter so it's touching the bp. Hand pressing the bp keeps it in just fine, so long as you don't go playing catch with the motor A gel would be too much work/costly. IE there are silicone 2/perchlorate compositions that would work, it all depends on how much you're willing to spend.

Thanks The gell inside of those little metal tins, that are used by catoring companies for heating food, is a very flammable gel that i use sometimes. You can get them at catoring stores.
Swany Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Just use some QM, or visco that is in a thin straw or is taped such that it is exposed at the top of the grain, ensuring ignition of the whole grain. In all reality, when the pressure builds up the whole grain will ignite fairly fast, would it not? I would like to see some static tests of bottom versus top fused, regarding the grain. I just don't see how important it is, though it could be worthwhile.
Mumbles Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 I've seen people experiment with rockets. Lighting from the top of the grain gives a definate increase in preformance. What most do is take visco and wrap it in tape up to the top of the fuse so it lights the top of the rocket and then the gases light the rest. A slight delay is noticeable if lighting from the bottom.
maximusg Posted September 26, 2006 Posted September 26, 2006 I read somewhere that ancient chinese rockets used a a mixtue of BP and tar. It had the consistancy of pavement grout. Perhaps this would work. No idea where to buy the right type of tar though
h&k machineguns Posted September 27, 2006 Author Posted September 27, 2006 Thanks for all the help. I think I'm going to take whistle mix and mix a little acetone in with it,to make a paste. I figure this may be plyable for an hour tops, but when it burns there should be no residue. I'm very new to all this,so you guys all are a big help. Maybe someday I can help a newbie, and get him a little ahead of the game.
