Verge Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 (edited) Hi, I am a complete newbie so I was wondering if someone could give me a list of beginner chemicals, tools, and chem. and pyro books.I've already made BP and Kno3 and sugar rockets along with a fountain or two.Oh, and when you list the chemicals make sure to add the color it makes. stckmndn Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 (edited) What exactly would you like to make? Here's a good place to poke around. Skylighter.com Edited July 12, 2011 by stckmndn
Verge Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 Generally speaking I'm into rockets but I would like to make any thing from power salutes to shell and cakes.
stckmndn Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 (edited) OK. Lots of good stuff here. wichitabuggywhip.com Lots of compositions here. pyroguide.com Edited July 12, 2011 by stckmndn
Mumbles Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 You'll probably want to go elsewhere if you're looking to make "power salutes"

Verge Posted July 12, 2011 Author Posted July 12, 2011 OK. Lots of good stuff here. wichitabuggywhip.com Lots of compositions here. pyroguide.com Holy crap that's a lot of compositions.Up until now I was just using cannon fuse.
stckmndn Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Good notes for beginners. Beginners Pages "Power Salutes" is a poor choice of wording. It implies you just want to make things that go boom.
stckmndn Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Read up well on safety. You'll find safety sections in the sites listed above. Read up VERY carefully about compatibility of chemicals before mixing ANYTHING.

layedbackkustomz Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 (edited) i think all the info is in this forum you just got to look in the newbie area. the wording power salutes isnt going to get you very far in this forum.considering what you have made and your skill level i would advise you to stay away from salutes and maybe work on Bp rockets with simple color or even some charcoal based star headers. as far as the list the links above are the best way to start. And theres always the chat feature on this forum where you can talk to people with all different skill levels and have your questions answered and reasoning why. plus the tips and tricks make things easy. Never stop reading about safety. Like LBK says, spend a lot of time in the Newbie Section and ask questions. Edited July 12, 2011 by stckmndn
dagabu Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 (edited) Wow.I know now never to mention anything intentionally explosive. Verge, Let me explain the situation better. Have you seen the painting of the dogs playing poker? It's not art, its funny and ridiculous but not art. Flash and boomers are light and a bang, like the dogs playing poker, by themselves, they are not art. What we try hard to do is to create art and sometimes a report is used to signify the end of a multibreak shell or even to surprise the audience with a heavy report or rondelles, timed reports or beraq. Did I lose you there at the end? That means that you are not ready to make them yet as they demand respect and the ability to be safe with them. We all liked boomers when we started, they were easy and fun, several firecrackers gutted to make a bigger one but even in our stupidity of youth, we knew that they had to be respected. Here we make art, look through the gallery and see the sky paintings, no dogs in sight. Since you are a rocket guy (and I do love rocket guys... in a non threatening and non creepy way mind you) I will give you a break and not lambast you but consider this as serious a warning you will get from us here, dont play with boomers, dont ask about boomers, when you are ready, we will talk to you about them and guide you through their uses and safe handling. This single subject is so important that the PGI has almost a whole page about flash and its prohibitions. Lets get you some rockets and pretty headings first, OK? -dag Edited July 12, 2011 by dagabu

dagabu Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 Okay show me the way. May I suggest that you make/buy some tooling for BP motors and then cut some BP bases stars, make a simple canister type shell and see where that gets you? -dag
Mothman Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 Could you please point me in the direction where I could find a tutorial on how to make a canister shell, or rocket, or anything that would be good for a newbie to practice his skills. Thanks

Those had tons of useful info. To start out what would you reccomend me buying/making if i want to make my own bp and use that to make shells, rockets and fountains.
TigerTail Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 dagabu, won't you suggest pyroguide to a beginner? I thought it was a great website.
Mumbles Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 I'm sure it's better than it was, but it has not always had the most reputable history. Pyroguide suffers, or at least at one point did, from the same downfalls as every other wiki source in that anyone can edit and add content. Wikipedia is fine, but there is a reason why you can't (or shouldn't) cite it as a source of information in school papers and the like. If you want to start making BP, one of the safest and easiest ways is with a ball mill. Many people start out with Harbor Freight rock tumblers. They're not fast, and they're not pretty, but they eventually get the job done. That combined with 100-200 50cal lead shot will get you well on your way to making BP. Besides the tools, you'll need potassium nitrate, sulfur, dextrin, and good charcoal. Good charcoal is probably most easily made at home, but it can be purchased as well though it's not always cheap. For lift, you'll also need a screen to granulate the BP through.
r1dermon Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 Pyroguide has some great, some poor, and some downright WRONG information on it.
dagabu Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 Pyroguide has some great, some poor, and some downright WRONG information on it. My sentiments as well, I stopped looking about a year ago when I asked questions here about some of the things I read there and found them to be wrong and sometimes dangerous. -dag
