Jordan123 Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Hi, your process is for get Magnalium ?You say the Mg burn on the water, but for why ? You add an other liquid on the water ?Please explain, i will not build Mg but i'm interested
FrankRizzo Posted May 22, 2013 Posted May 22, 2013 I realize that this is a very old thread, but FrankRizzo how much extra magnesium are we talking about here? Like in terms of percentages would I be shooting for a 1% surplus of magnesium (101:100 - mg:al) or about how much? I usually figure ~10%. 60:40 is a good ratio.
ollie1016 Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Has anyone got any good places where they source their Magnesium from? I don't really want to pay $17 a kg. Im in the Uk, so if any fellow brits could help me I'd really apprechiate it!Thanks
dan999ification Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 (edited) Mg powder? if its ingots You probably don't need it to make your own mg/al, although fun I still haven't as mg/al is quite cheap anywayAnd the screening has been done for me. You can find it on e bay or scrap mag wheels, sacrificial anodes, some gearbox housings, steering columns. Just remember that even if you pay £17 you won't pay much or anything for the al and you have 2k of mg/al for £17 ( that is cheap)But then you need to reduce it to the mesh you need which will require costs for screens and suitable sized mill. Some uk pyro suppliers carry a range of fractions and meshes some make to order if you need something unusual, pm for details. Jordan. Mg can not be put out by water, that just makes it angry, the mg/al floats due to air bubbles being formed as its quenched and won't go out until there is no air for it to burn. Dan.
