h&k machineguns Posted September 23, 2006 Posted September 23, 2006 Is there a way to make a whistle rocket that doesn't Whistle ? I'm wanting all the benifits of the whistle rockets over BP rockets( Faster higher ... )without the whistle,is this possible ?Also were do I buy Red Iron oxide. I checked skylighter and firefox and they don't seem to sell it.Thanks
pa_pyro Posted September 23, 2006 Posted September 23, 2006 I doubt you can make the rockets noiseless. I think firefox would have it. Either find a different supplier or even easier.(make your own)You can use H2O2 and steel wool + a catalyst, the bleach method, or even electrolysis. ...ahem http://www.firefox-fx.com/chemicals.htm O and http://www.skylighter.com/mall/chemicals.asp?Sort=I it's there try lookin under red iron oxide

I was looking under Red not oxide. Thanks for the help. Still no way to make a whistle rocket ,but no whistle ?
ActionTekJackson Posted September 23, 2006 Posted September 23, 2006 If I remember right its the vibration in the casing that makes the sound, so its possible a different kind of casing might have the desired effect, but I have no idea what. If anything it'd just be to dangerous of a material to use... *shrugs* I could be way off here too so...
FrankRizzo Posted September 23, 2006 Posted September 23, 2006 Mixing whistle with aifloat charcoal will make a propellant superior to BP without the whistle. Steve Laduke adds 20% additional charcoal to a 76/23/1 salicylate-based whistle mix to make his "hybrid" fuel.
ewest Posted September 23, 2006 Posted September 23, 2006 I have Steve's video on the Hybrid Black Powder rockets and Rich Wolter sells the special tooling for these rockets too. Rich couldn't have explained it any better in his online catalog so I hope he doesn't mind me posting the text to it: STEVE LADUKE'S HYBRID BP ROCKET KITSSteve's new rocket design is a core burning rocket using modified whistle and black powder fuel. These rockets by far put out more thrust than any other comparable size rocket. A 1" I.D. motor was tested on a rocket dyno and had an initial thrust of 49.6 pounds lifting a 6" ball shell with no problem. These rockets do not strobe or whistle but fly just like the standard black powder rockets. Due to the type of fuel and density required, these rockets have to be pressed and not rammed. Comes with spindle and base, and 4 rammers, A, B, C and D. I strongly recommend a pressing sleeve to support the case during loading.

Wouldn't the 20% added charcole make the rocket a little slower, assuming we are compairing whistle rocket that makes noise and one that doesn't(You example) ? Man since I found this forum I have learned a bunch. I just decided to use cat litter instead of the Benite clay, and the cat liter almost seems better. Any drwbacks on using cat litter ?I haven't actually fired it yet.I just got through pressing it in and giving it the cratch test.
FrankRizzo Posted September 23, 2006 Posted September 23, 2006 Yeah, it does slow the burn of the whistle mix down a bit, but that allows you to use a core and nozzle without the engine CATO'ing. The added pressure and gas volume makes a more powerful motor than the equivalent "noisy" one. Your chemicals (salicylate $$) also go much farther with the added cheap charcoal. As for nozzles, most cheap kitty litters and driveway oil removers are bentonite anyway. I use a Wal-Mart brand of litter called "Special Kitty" (yellow bag) which works wonderfully either ground up in a coffee mill beforehand or just pressed up straight from the bag. The advantage to running it through the coffee grinder first is that you can get a more consistent measure by volume. FYI, if you use the Special Kitty brand, the blue colored granules mixed in there are still bentonite, but just dyed blue for aesthetics
