killforfood Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Short of a full blown SCBA for Firemen, is there a low cost gas mask that would allow me to breath while hand lighting shells? I had to light 300 in a row (I need better knee pads)with a short break in the middle while the mid show ran its course. Thursday the wind was just right but Friday I about choked to death!

I know a few guys I shoot with just wear a bandanna over the face while hand lighting a show. I think a full on gas mask might be a bit extreme.
WonderBoy Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 How did you have your tubes set up? We usually do rows of racks with a short break between them every couple racks. Then when I light them I just walk down the row light a shell, walk to the next rack, light another shell, maybe skip a few racks if I feel like it, then when you get to the end just work your way back the other direction. With this method I have never had any problems with smoke
killforfood Posted July 8, 2011 Author Posted July 8, 2011 There are no gaps between the racks except at the mid show. That’s where I get my breather while three multi shot boxes do their thing. The Rodeo Association only gives us 12min-15min to shoot the whole show. That’s 300+ 4” shells, 6 36ct multishot boxes, 20 or 30 3” salutes and 1 parachute flag. That’s over 500 total shots and less than 2 seconds between shots average. I’m pulling and lighting as fast as my old knees will move. Yah, a full face gas mask would be a bit extreme. I got online and found some cheap face masks that have cartridges with the NIOSH 95 rating. I think that would be adequate.
dagabu Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Grab one of the 5400 or 5600 3M half face masks at Home Depot or Menards, they run $25.00 and the pre filters (the only parts that ever gets dirty) are replaceable. -dag
