oldguy Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 I checked into red-green-yellow smoke dye costs & was somewhat shocked at how expensive they are. A finely powdered 60/40 Potassium Nitrate - Sugar mixture melted together slowly under low heat & allowed to harden makes a lot of inexpensive easily ignitable light gray smoke. What is the least expensive way to give that smoke a distinctive color - even black?I am just looking for something other than gray & whatever is the least expensive.
jimbo Posted July 3, 2011 Posted July 3, 2011 oldguy there's a video on youtube where a guy using potassium nitrate, sugar and an orange dye got really good results,he cooks it up like you would knsu propellant adds the dye to the molten mix,if the video isn't a fraud he got results similar to chlorate/lactose based smoke compositions,my internet's slow at the moment so I can't look through youtube to link the video.

The video was proven several times to be a fraud there are smoke mixes out there with anthracene also some with naphthalene (moth balls cant expensive other wise old people wouldnt smell like them)
oldguy Posted July 3, 2011 Author Posted July 3, 2011 (moth balls cant expensive other wise old people wouldnt smell like them) Does that mean that "young peaple" smell like diapers that need changing.
Ralph Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 Does that mean that "young peaple" smell like diapers that need changing. No I have a few freinds that live in nursing homes that I visit and while Im there I sometimes think about what shape the crystals of naphthalene forming in my lungs are, they go through a ton of them so they cant cost to much
Mumbles Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 The chinese also tend to smell like naphthalene. They apparently often use it to keep bugs out of their clothes (you know, what it's intended for). It's hard to sit in some science classes sometimes. There are other ways to make colored smokes, but most produce toxic inorganic salts in order to do so. The expensive dyes are really the best way to make colored smokes unfortunately.
