Bilbobaker Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 What is the best wood for tiger tail comets, stars etc?My findings suggest white pine but I only have yellow pine locally.I'm thinking about doing a test on old growth Douglass fir bark, that stuff is amazing to burn so it should do well. For just plain BP I use either Madrone or Alder. Those seem to be most available and have the best burn rates. What do you all use, and do you make your own or just buy it?

Like you said, pine is really a good charcoal for stars, but I find it more economical to buy commercial charcoal as it usually works just as well for that purpose. I've found cowboy brand lump charcoal which is a mix of different hardwoods to be really good for charcoal streamers. It can be found at lowes in an 8.8 lb bag for fairly cheap, around 8 bucks. Most hardwoods will work well for streamers. Edited June 11, 2011 by Xtreme Pyro
Seymour Posted June 11, 2011 Posted June 11, 2011 (edited) I'm sure yellow pine will make lovely charcoal spark effects. At work we use Alder for lift/burst BP. For personal use I have in the past used a lot of willow, but recently a lot of Paulownia. In the near future I'm going to try Pate, Cottonwood, and Totora. All have good reports. I have had success with Poplar too. Edited June 11, 2011 by Seymour

Bilbobaker Posted June 11, 2011 Author Posted June 11, 2011 I gave Douglas fir and some different cedar wood several tests, the results were acceptable but not top notch in my opinion.I'm looking for long lasting orange sparks now.Anyone tested Old Growth Doug fir bark.... that stuff is amazing as a fuel for steam turbines etc. Very nice spark trails and heat energy.Be nice to see some tests both in data timings and video.

Best BP I ever made...was newsprint/packing paper charcoal. Never used balsa, but have willow. was just as fast, if not a bit better.
