Every once in awhile I receive a few pounds of dry ice from food orders.(just got about two lbs. today) Any ideas for what I can use it for?(chemistry, cooling etc...If not I'll just dump it in water, and no I'm not using it for dry ice bombs! )

A mixture of dry ice and acetone will result in temps around -100 C. Other than that, you can make some ice cream, and Rootbeer I do believe.

The icecream is slightly carbonated, and is... different, though. Plus, it has to be finely powdered. Liquid nitrogen for icecream.

Rootbeer is exellent with it, though.

Taking a chunk hollowing it out a bit, putting some burning Mg on it and then putting another chunk on top will result in a very amusing luminous display. I guess other comps may be used as well.

Put a piece in a buddy's beer, making sure he doesnt drink it. The foam goes everywhere. Its hilarious. Same effect as in a bowl of hot soapy water. It lead to a drinking game of who can drink the head as it rises...it was too fast for most.

The dry ice acetone cooling bath will liquify chlorine. And using the bath under the recieving flask while distilling bromine effectivly condenses almost all fumes. Good enough to distill bromine indoors.

Thanks for the ideas.(I heard about being able to carbonate fruit somewhere, that would be neat. I'll have to try the acetone and magnesium sometime.) Too bad by this morning most if it evaporated away, and last night I couldn't resist throwing a chunk in boiling water. When I get more next month ill try to get back with results.( The dry ice/acetone might also be good for preventing runaways  )

Me and my friends got some from science class when we had a reliever, we chucked it into the urinal and pissed on it. Not all at once obviously. It skidded around real fast steaming and stuff because it was boiling (subliming actually.)

Just an idea.
