alexthegreat00 Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Working on my ball mill and I was confronted with the problem of how to attach my ball bearings to my frame and to the shaft. Did a little research and found a couple different ways. Some people heated them up and pressed them on. Others glued them on and yet others used something like this: link. My question is how did you guys do this and which way is the best. Thanks.
Pechovski Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 (edited) I would have gone with bearing houses instead. http://file.seekpart.com/productsimage/2010/7/28/201072804833812.jpg If you still want to use your normal bearings and if your frame is in wood, you could just drill a hole out and press them in flush with the frame and then drill out the shaft diameter in a metal/wood plate that you then screw over the bearing against the frame, holding the bearing in. http://imageshack.us/m/717/1147/bearingholder.jpg To keep the shaft from moving you could simply use drillstops, or spring-clips:http://images.drillspot.com/pimages/1485/148594_300.jpg Edited May 16, 2011 by Pechovski
killforfood Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 I agree with Pechovski, Pillow Blocks are the best way to go. They have set screws built in to hold your shaft in place and mounting holes to hold the whole assembly firmly to your frame. Another good alternative that works well is Go-Kart rear axle shafts, bearings and hangers. I run a 1 ¼” axle on my Sprint Kart and big 260lb butt hasn’t bent one yet. A 1” axle should be plenty tough enough for any DIY Ball Mill. Bearings and FlangettesAxles

killforfood Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Don't get me started on fun guns. I'm a gun addict and there is no cure... Well, maybe more guns.
marks265 Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 This is also another configuration to mount through the side of box or frame. http://www.iptci.com/store/2 Mark
