Balls and Cans

It looks like a two stage rocket on the far right., is that correct?

Not yet on the two stage, im trying to work in some kind of candy propellant for the comp dag. Just finalized my bp comp that seems to be realatively reliable, now on to the candy and if i can get something worked out with that this weekend I will have an entry. That being said the passfire between the two is something I really need to perfect.

and as far as a hole to put your stick in?, well that might make a whole new income stream!

I clearly stated stickS Mr Infidelity, let's not confuse things now :)

Maybe some of the more gullible Europeans will show some interest in your waterfront oceanview property, I heard the waves are quite nice in TN this time of the year aren't they?

<_< What the hell have i ever done?

Well I have just succesfully made something that looks like a ball and will find out Sat if the thing will break right. What I need is instructions on the "three strip" pasting method. I realize that this is where you coat the shell with paper but I have not found anything that I can understand on how it is done. I made my ball using a softball as a plug thinking it was three inches in diameter. Well I guess I should have measured it first. Nothing broke = nothing learned so now I have three paper mache balls all nice and neat but could not figure out the method that you guys use to get that great looking exterior. I basically wrapped it with a lot of tape and am going to pray for the best.

My first shell was a toilet roll can that was wrapped and glued but not bound with string. Kind of got a horsetail effect. I think I will get a better break with string and proper pasting. Any input will be appreciated.

Oh and if there is an instructible or thread that relates to this just point me in the right direction, I do try and be dilligent in my searches but there are thousands of threads here.

To try and hi-jack my own thread back to some form of sanity I feel obliged to give an update........... Things went horribly horribly wrong. As I understand it ricing makes the bp more productive. Well to counter this I began adding charcoal to the mix. First rocket, to counter the hotter bp was nozzeless. Since it only had a small salute on top I thought what would could possible go wrong. IMMEDIATE Cato with solute going off maybe 0.5 seconds after Cato. Good news.... timing fuse/passfire worked.

Second rocket with taped and spiked tp roll with C6 stars and riced bp. This one had a nozzle AND had an additional 5 grams of charcoal into the 70/15/10 mix. Well, a spark got loose in the header and I thought it Cato'd. About the time I thought everything was over it flew beautifully out of sight! WTF(great vid tho lol)

Third rocket with 4" paper mache and tape ball with a heinz 57 mix of stars and stuff also had a nozzle and had an additional 10 grams of charcoal added to the 70/15/10. The rocket Cato'd then the ball went off (fuse worked).

Well....... pretty much have tail tucked between legs with a big slice of humble pie in the food bowl. I was kinda down trodden but was not going to let that slow me down. As proof of concept I carefully measured out another rocket load of hot bp, added 10g of charcoal, applied small bp salute and took it out and shot it. Rocket worked fine but passfire/timing fuse failed. My rocket and salute are now lodged in tree about 40' up.

This weekend, new projects.... going to try fountains or gerbs or whatever you call those things. I think the fuel thing is close to correct for the rockets but were going to let that rest for weekend as I am really tired of Cato's.

Oh and I did get a look at the tuts (pronounced toots, as in tutorial) and the U tube videos, man I am nowhere near pasting my stuff nearly enough. But that said the learning continues.

Are your motors coreburners? If they are then your Fuel comp is probably to blame for the CATOs.

I was reading back but didn't find it so that why I asked.

If they are then 70/15/10 is probably not going to get you results other then salutes on a stick.

Try 6-3-1 and up the KNO a bit if confident. Also the time you ballmill (if you ballmill that is) matters, the longer the fine and I think the faster.

@ Pechovski ; Nothing, Same thing I'm doing :)

GTI,

Nice after action report. Where would excitement be without failures?

In the long run you’ll always learn more from the failures.

I would post more but I need to finish putting the garden in.

See ya.

Hey gun,

What size increments are you using? Are they 1lb'ers?

Also, are your tubes split open at the bottom? They look like they are in that picture.

And how are you making your passfire/fusing your headers?

Ok, to summarize.....

I started with agrichems when I got my ball mill but did not rice. Had awesome results using home made 1lb tooling. Tooling came in from Harry along with chems and continued to have good results. Began ricing and all hell broke loose. It has been exciting to say the least.

I really think the addition of 10g of charcoal settles the mix down pretty good. Well enough I am confident enough to load 5 tubes to try and work this passfire thing out. I think that ends up giving me a 75/15/20 mix?!?! Using larger charcoal for last 10g and it makes for nice tails.

Not sure about the split open at the bottome thing. They are just standard 3/4x7.5". Don't have a press yet so I ram everything and really want to add some metals to the mix but no can do till i get a press . Don't have my measuring spoon infront of me but I think I ram a teaspoon at a time. Takes about 12 increments for the whole rocket.

I have done the passfire pretty much the same everytime. 1/8" hand drilled hole in clay next to tube. Green Chinese visco in there with meal d on top of clay, not a bunch but more than a little. Then header is fused with more green visco wrapped in tape. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't.

I'm at work till the weekend so can not upload video. They are kinda funny.

As a side note.......... Kill, picking a few tomato's now, got squash and cucumbers over 2", hot peppers should be getting ready soon and corn is 18" tall....... not bragging just saying :D

For entertainment and educational purposes only I post the following:

The first I affectionately call the cart before the horse, I think you can figure it out when you see it. The second I refer to as my ground break 4"TT/Heinz 57 with 50g unintentional salute, never mind the voices in your head when you watch this, apparently they are easily entertained! (as there is NO sound), the MD says the medication will make it better.

Well crap I think my files are bigger than 512, let me work on it.

http://pyrobin.com/files/dscf1846.mp4 sorry about the long download time, I know not what I am doing

http://pyrobin.com/files/dscf1847.mp4 ditto above

At least I have supportive voices in my head, and yes we were a "fer piece back" behind heavy cover

Gun, Do you have Windows 7 on your PC? If so, you can use Windows Live Movie Maker to edit and post your video easily. The MP4 video file is problematic as it renders into very large files sizes and not every browser likes to open them.

I think I did that right.

After following your tutorial there Dag, I have this to show for it. The little medicine bottles hanging off the side are salutes attached with fuse and hot glue. The original idea was posted here somewhere but I lost the page.
