Balls and Cans

Recommended Posts

Well I have just succesfully made something that looks like a ball and will find out Sat if the thing will break right. What I need is instructions on the "three strip" pasting method. I realize that this is where you coat the shell with paper but I have not found anything that I can understand on how it is done. I made my ball using a softball as a plug thinking it was three inches in diameter. Well I guess I should have measured it first. Nothing broke = nothing learned so now I have three paper mache balls all nice and neat but could not figure out the method that you guys use to get that great looking exterior. I basically wrapped it with a lot of tape and am going to pray for the best.

My first shell was a toilet roll can that was wrapped and glued but not bound with string. Kind of got a horsetail effect. I think I will get a better break with string and proper pasting. Any input will be appreciated.

Oh and if there is an instructible or thread that relates to this just point me in the right direction, I do try and be dilligent in my searches but there are thousands of threads here.

There are a couple of decent tutorials on YouTube.

Traditional 3-strip method using gummed tape - you can use the same method using strips of kraft paper and paste -

Here's a different and interesting technique -

Of course, you can save all that trouble by purchasing one of these.

Gun,

You can use my tutorial on timed reports to successfully make canister shells filled with stars, inserts, whatever you want. Just fill the can and follow the directions, they work well.

Did you all miss the obvious?

Those balls and cans are supernatural anti-gravitational devices!!!

I mean seriously Guntoteninfadel, did you not see them floating in space when you took the picture.

You're gonna be rich Dude. Put that picture on eBay and sell the recipe.

Just don't let the Commies get it.

PS Can I have a cut for making the discovery?

OK seriously Dagubu, your Timed Report tutorial was very well done.

Instructions were clear and the pictures look professional. There were two pictures that were huge and should be resized but other then that, very excellent.

I want to read more, link please.

Please let me know which pictures I missed, they all display mo larger then 600 dpi on my browser.

Never-mind, I found and removed them. They were extras and I have no idea how they got there.

Thanks for the compliment, I really like to make and post tutorials but they take time and the kids eat most of my extra time up now days. I have pictures for the bottom shot, two and three stage rockets, splitting comets, comet shells and some other small tuts. I hope to get them going again right after PGI.

BTW- I LOVE goofing around here, too many are too serious around here (me too).

I've seen that tutorial before, it's very good. I've never seen video of the shell fired though. I've seen your ring report shells but never one of your snail shells like that.

Man you're fast. I just got through re-reading the whole tutorial and didn't see the giant pictures. I thought I owed an apologie.

Seriously though, top notch tutorial. I'm a Noob but would have no problem following your instructions.

Guntoteninfadel, Dags tutorial should up your can game dramatically. The basic design could easily be scaled up or down to meet our Noob needs.

Dag, do you have more tutorials like this?

Dag, would you mind breaking it down for me. There was a lot going on.

Rocket size, fuel, nozzle type? I loved the WOOOSH and big tail.

What were you using for Charcoal.

Did the initial burst have some metal or white stars in it?

Apparently you had a ring within a ring of timed reports and topped it off with a bottom shot.

Very cool, I watched it about a dozen times.

The first youtube tutorial is not the 3 strip method. There is nothing different about that one than normal pasting, just going in an unnatural pattern. Typically you could just lay strips next to each other, overlapping by half. I use something like that, but leave a pole at each end to prevent my shells from looking like eggs. Despite my best guess, PyroGuide actually has it right.

Not at all, the rocket motor is a 3# BP motor, the fuel is simple 75:15:10 BP with 5% 80 mesh charcoal mixed in right before ricing it. Only water is used to rice it and that is just sprayed a little at a time until it will clump when squeezed. The tooling is of course Universal Tooling (UT), and the nozzle is formed from a mix of Kaolin, Bentonite, Hawthorne and some wax.

The charcoal is Cowboy lump charcoal, the burst is 4:1 coated rice hulls with a small strobe festival ball contents thrown into the break to make them think that the shell was over and done. Then came the rings! I told them it was just a strobe shell.

The rings were not well developed, I have had better ones before and after but this one had the best video. I actually have another shell ready to get assembled later today with the two rings and bottom shot. I hope the rings are better developed as I will be breaking this one pretty hard!!

I'M RUINED!

I was banking on my cut being in the millions.

Well… I better go return that matching set of Gucci Rocket Totes.:(

ATTENTION MMDC: The following posting is tongue-in-cheek and should in no way be taken as an actual statement of fact. No GUCCI Rocket Totes were purchased in the hopes that GUN had found the secret to levitation.

Dagabu, quit spreading lies, I have proof.

Because the Gucci Rocket Tote bags were custom made for me, Gucci refused my request to return them.

I'm willing to sell the three piece set for a substantial loss.

Are there any offers?

LOL, Well I willing to pony up at least 12$ for the Gucci bags, should I ever go to a formal shoot I'm sure everyone will be impressed, and as far as a hole to put your stick in?, well that might make a whole new income stream!

Oh and EVERYONE needs to know, now that my Levitation deal was found to be somewhat fraudulent I am relisting my ocean from property in northern TN, serious inquires only
