Chemguy Posted September 12, 2006 Posted September 12, 2006 Hi, I am having trouble making potassium chlorate. I am using this method. Boil some Water inside on either the stove, or in the microwave. Pour that water into your Pyrex glass container, take it outside and boil it on your heat source.Using a ratio of 1:6 measure out one part Potassium Chloride, and six parts HTH.Slowly add the HTH to the boiling water, and stir it in until dissolved. When the HTH has been dissolved add in your Potassium Chloride.Boil this mixture for about 5 minutes. While boiling a chalky substance will be formed, this is Calcium Chloride and can be filtered out.To make a filter take one of the buckets and punch enough holes in the bottom so tht the liquid will drain through quickly, then take your Cloth and set it on the bottom of the bucket and up the sides. When the filter has been made hold it over the other bucket and filter the liquid while it is still boiling. When the liquid has been filtered pour it back into the glass dish and boil for another minute, then place it in a cool spot and allow the crystals to condense out of the water.Pour the water off, and spread the crystals around on a glass pan to dry. HOWEVER... there is a big problem, when I filter the boiling mixture, it fumes up making chlorine and eats through the cloth, even 8 layers. Now I Know that it isn't reacting with the cloth because I dropped some cloth into the boiling solution and nothing happened. So I waited for it to cool down, then I filtered it slowly, this worked but alot of residue came through, I then boiled this solution, but the most I could evaporate still left a sticky yellow/gold gel, which absorbs HEAPS of water. Help would be very appreciated.
Chemguy Posted September 12, 2006 Author Posted September 12, 2006 Infact here is a picture of the result (of course, I scaled down the recipie just incase.)
DeAdFX Posted September 15, 2006 Posted September 15, 2006 Try adding the potassium chloride later on. Prehaps heating the HTH(Ca(ClO)2) for 10 mins then toss in the KCl?
Mumbles Posted October 3, 2006 Posted October 3, 2006 It's a company that makes Calcium Hypochlorite shock tablets, amongst other pool/spa supplies.
Chemguy Posted October 6, 2006 Author Posted October 6, 2006 The letters stand for high test hypochlorite.
