madmandotcom Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 (edited) i keep getting bits of sand from my sand paper in amongst my al filings, is there any way to either prevent this or separate the two of them? Edited February 25, 2011 by madmandotcom
pillyg Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Just buy it online. It might even be cheaper to buy it. It will also save you a ton of work.
Mumbles Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Not everyone can purchase it online (legally at least). What kind of aluminum are you trying to make? I mean for what effect. It may help to develop an alternative method, or help you out.
madmandotcom Posted February 26, 2011 Author Posted February 26, 2011 i am wishing to experiment with al's affects on knsu rocket fuel and general purpose pyro, i can buy it online however my previous experience with that particular seller is that he is rather lazy so i try and buy as little as possible from him
oldguy Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 Not sure how good the Al is, but I have heard you can make a sand like powder with aluminum foil (cheapest thinnest brand possible), a paper shredder & a heavy duty blender (with water in it). Shred the foil into thin strips like Christmas tree tinsel with a paper shredder. Fill a blender ½ full of water. Add the tinsel small amounts at a time pulsing the blender with each addition. Until you have about 2 or 3 ounces of Al in the blender & blend. Blend for 20 or 30 minutes. Blender may heat up running that long at once. So, you can blend in 5 minute increments allowing the blender to cool between time. Once you have the load down to sand like particles. Filter the Al through a paper coffee filter, set powder aside to dry in a warm place. Any sort of dehydrator works well to speed drying time. After you have whatever amount you want. Run it through a ball mill with non-sparking media to reduce it much finer. Never tried it, but it seems like it would work, although it would be laborious. I would wager this method is hard on a blender, but a heavy duty one should take it.
gasbag Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Making Aluminium powder?I've seen video clips of home made aluminium powder, but if you're going to use a cheap blender OR a cheap coffee grinder (one or the other), does anyone know which is better suited? It doesn't need to be ultra, ultra fine for flash powder, only for thermite mixtures.
schroedinger Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 You could also just shred al foil and chuck all into the ball mill. From then you can mill down to german dark size

If so, the results...prior to using a ball mill?
Mumbles Posted November 10, 2013 Posted November 10, 2013 Have you ever actually measured or confirmed that you can mill down to single micron particle size (german dark size), or are you just postulating?
