Making lift powder the easy way

Am I correct in saying that there are 'micro pores' in charcoal?

If so, why does the 'CIA' method work as well as the ball milling method?

Is it just because the KN03 is recrystalised at such a rate that it becomes such a fine powder?

Thanks for clearing this up.

Actually I find the powder from the CIA method is NOT quite as fast as the powder from an efficient ball mill. I never did controlled testing however, and haven't made any in the past year since I built a Sponenburgh style mill.

You are correct about the rapid crystallization forming fine KNO3. If done correctly, the KNO3 'crashes' out of solution in micro crystalline form.

The KNO3 also is completely evenly dispersed throughout the fuels. Yes, there are pores in charcoal I do believe. I am also a firm believer in wetting the BP. It does incorporate it better. Even the most efficient mill can only get stuff so fine. Also the KNO3 can act as a binder. Perhaps instead of getting into the pores it just binds the chemicals together, which essentially would have the same effect.

Okay thanks Frozentech and Mumbles. I too always corn all my BP after making it now. I've never used the CIA method, but I gather the Frogfot uses it, and he seems to have fairly decent BP. Anyways, this has gone a little offtopic.

One way would be to use a coffee grinder for BP. I knoow, yadda-yadda-dangerous.... but operate it remotely. Properly ground BP makes OK lift*

*-OK, not perfect, ball milled is superior, bur mine, after granulated with 2% of dextrin using a cheese grater throws stuff around, works for starmines, etc.

yea, i just put a ball mill on the top of my list for christmas , right now i can keep working on the shells themselves and put the lift in at the very end. Thanks all! :D

lol You're going to have a fair stock pile of shells if you're going to practise making them until Christmas!
