oldguy Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 (edited) I am curious if there is anything wrong with using a hand operated lever action grease gun pump to fill a morning glory type sparkler paper tube with a thick sparkler comp slurry? Edit to add:Fairly low PSII realize iron filings, ect would damage the O rings.Possibly even scratch the inner wall. But, I have a big bag of extra O rings & several old grease guns. Peret Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 These are normally filled dry using funnel and wire. I should think there will be a problem drying them out, if you use a slurry, and the compound may crack and burn unevenly. Otherwise I suppose you could use a grease gun, though it occurs to me there are easier ways to do it (and easier to clean) such as disposable syringes. It's not like you need the pressure.
oldguy Posted January 25, 2011 Author Posted January 25, 2011 (edited) True, & I have a few 50ml syringes.I suppose a small plastic funnel would also suffice.Just pour it in. Edit to add: If poured dry, what would spot the comp from flying out, when someone waved a lit one around? PS, If you ever need them.Howards electronics has all sorts of dispensing syringes, needles, etc.Not to mention a lot of other neat little gadgets.http://www.howardele...n/products.html Edited January 25, 2011 by oldguy
Peret Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 You don't just pour dry composition in with a funnel. You use a rammer (the "wire"), slender enough to fit through the funnel, and jiggle it up and down fairly firmly by hand. The powder gradually drops through the gap between the rammer and the funnel, and the rammer compacts it in the tube. It's not as solid as a rammed or pressed rocket, but it isn't going to fall out when you wave the tube about, especially when it's lit and the end surface is molten.
