Granulation size = Mess size ...?

Is “granulation” size the same as mesh screen size?

Say for instance, if a comp calls for X amount of an ingredient to be “Granulation 16”.

Does that mean 16 mesh?

Example below:

"The fuel includes particles sizes consisting of granulation 16, granulation 18, and mixtures thereof."

I doubt it, but you can never be entirely sure. I don't know what book it was, but one of the older ones has a range like that. They had screens labeled No. 1-20 or something like that. So mixing instructions would be to pass through the No. 4 screen 3 times, and twice through the No. 10 screen or something like that. I suspect it would be a mixture of particles that pass through their No. 16 screen, and their No. 18 screen, though probably not 16 and 18 mesh, It'd be the same as calling for a mixture of 2FA and 4FA. This would be the same as a mixture of particles 4-12 mesh, and particles 12-20 mesh.

Can you give us the source of this formulation. If it's not from a book or otherwise referenceable source, perhaps the formula and we could maybe help suggest proper mesh sizes.

Later in the patent it mentions they're ASTM standards for some military spec. See tables 1 and 2 in the pdf version of the patent.

If they mention a standard sieve size, then that is usually correlated pretty close to the actual mesh size.

Thank you Sir. After more looking & reading.

I found mention of Standard Sieve Sizes, which they refer to in these patents.

From there I found a conversion table.

#12 Standard sieve size =10 mesh

#14 Standard sieve size =12 mesh

#16 Standard sieve size =14 mesh

#18 Standard sieve size =16 mesh

#20 Standard sieve size =20 mesh

Off to purchase to screens tomorrow.

I assume Stainless is best?

Thanks again....

You won't find all those odd sizes in the average store. 10, 20, 40 and 60 mesh are the most common and useful to have, along with a bit of 1/4 inch galvanized hardware cloth (4 mesh) that can be had at Home Depot.

Most likely you are right.

If I cannot find them local, there is always online sources & Ebay.

I don't need to be as exact as MilSpec's are anyway.

So long as I get at least fairly close to the ballpark range.

EDIT TO ADD:

LOL, stupid me......I have a fairly good set already.

Google “Jobe” or “Keene” + Classifiers

Meant for classifying placer gold gravels

Some good sizes ready made.

Another set is:

So, I will soon find out about bright AL "mess" you guys all laugh about.

Sounds like a PITA to work with.

You're gonna love it... nice glittering particles floating EVERYWHERE.

I had some, used it a couple of times and then traded it off with another member.

Never again in my shop.
