ActionTekJackson Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 Holy shit! That went way the hell up there... The delay was Loooong, not to mention the time delay on the sound from the break and the dragons eggs. Wow... The pics of it look totally proffessional, you are definately a damned good pyrotechnition. =) wow....
TheSidewinder Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 Wow is right. Damn nice shell, Al. How many paste wraps on that shell, if you don't mind revealing your secrets? M
leosedf Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 AMAZING! No other words to describe it! How do you get a such round shell? Looks so damn fine.
al93535 Posted August 26, 2006 Author Posted August 26, 2006 Thanks guys. I was a bit disappointed about the pistils burning so fast. I wish they would have spread farther. I had 4 layers of pasted 70lb paper, and 2 layers of 40 lb pasted paper. These were overlapped over the previous strip by one half. So really 8 layers and 4 layers. I make the hemi's myself, and so I start with a rather round starting point. Also I make football shaped papers to paste. This really helps to keep the shell uniform and round. Like this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/al93535/paper.jpg That goes exactly half way around the shell. And just in case anyone is wondering, I make the hemi with 4 layers of 70 lb kraft.
Givat Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 doesn't the football shaped papers are too time consuming?
Pretty green flame Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 doesn't the football shaped papers are too time consuming? So what. Al takes his time and the results are obvious.
krackerjack9 Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 extreemly well done, now get about 30 of those goin up and it be pretty darn cool,, i stick with my 3in ones for now and move up latter, still having issues on my lift powder but cant get that worked out till I get home again in Dec.. but a few more years I retire will have all the time in the world to get things donw pat.
dragonman586 Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 Amazing as always! I think you've got this competition won, your only competition may e ravaz's 12incher.
hst45 Posted August 26, 2006 Posted August 26, 2006 GREAT job Al ! Chemistry as art! You, sir are a master craftsman. What's your estimation of the height at the break, and how much lift powder did you use? Also, while I'm being nosey, were those lead tetraoxide dragon eggs or bismuth subcarbonate?
Bayarea510 Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Al, I have to say that it one fine looking shell! Being a member of WPA I have seen some very nice looking shells and rockets and I would have to say you would give some of the big boys of the club a run for their money!!! By any chance you a wpa member? If you are, do you plan on going to "Do-It"? I would love to pick your brain on some stuff.
al93535 Posted August 27, 2006 Author Posted August 27, 2006 The football shaped paper take about 20 minutes of extra time. But I would rather spend the time and have a nice shell, both in appearance and performance. Humm, My estimation of the height: about 600 feet or so. I really cannot begin to estimate the diameter of the flower. I am sure with some math I could do it, but I'd rather not I used 98 grams of lift, the shell weighed just under 1600 grams. My lift is home made, -6 +12 corned grains. I am not a member of any pyro group yet, I am however joining WPA this January. I want to attend both WWB and Do-it! And thanks for all the compliments!
Bayarea510 Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Well Al, If you do make it to Winter Blast let me know! I would love to do lunch and pick the brain!! Me and a few friends have started out making shells about 1 year or so ago and would love to learn some good tips. Also WPA is always looking for guys to do "how to" classes for both Do-it and Winter Blast so if that might be your cup of tea let me know! ThanksGeorge
noslo98 Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Cool thanks for the info, those shells look better than 90% of the manufactured shells we have been shooting in shows lately.
optimus Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Al, as always, that was a high-class device. Keep up the good work! And noslo98 is right - better than some professionally manufactured stuff I've seen.
itwasntme Posted August 27, 2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Wow, can think of any other words than amazing. I'd pay $20 for that shell
pyrochris Posted August 29, 2006 Posted August 29, 2006 Wow, can think of any other words than amazing. I'd pay $20 for that shell haha, that shell is worth a lot more than 20$ man.
Draco_Aster Posted September 7, 2006 Posted September 7, 2006 Im sure we would all pay $20 for that shell. Seriously Al, that is the greatest work of art I have ever seen. Gave mee goosebumps....seriously. You inspire me. Keep it up.
pa_pyro Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 I'd pay 20 bucks to see that shell in person!
Mardec Posted September 13, 2006 Posted September 13, 2006 Here in Belgium you will be lucky if you can buy a 3" shell for 20 $ Hey Al, how did you put the pistil in? Did you just put the glitterstars inside you break charge? I don't know how to make a pistil in my shell, can someone help me out?
al93535 Posted September 13, 2006 Author Posted September 13, 2006 Yes, I just added the stars in the the burst charge.
