Herms Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Is there a specific ratio or rule of thumb when wetting star comps to be pumped? How do you figure out how much water or water/alcohol to use to activate the binder. Ive read that over wetting glitter/twinkler stars can ruin the effect. Would it be like 10% of composition weight?
Seymour Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 It depends completely on the composition... unfortunately the differences can be very significant. 8% or 30% would both be pretty standard for some compositions. It should hold together somewhat well when squeezed with hand pressure, but you don't want excess solvent being squeezed out. To complicate it slightly more, the harder it's pressed the less water is required. As for dampening glitters too much, it's somewhat debatable. Some people say it's needed. Others point out that it only applies for some compositions, and that they should be avoided. However using below 10% with glitters should work fine and also dry out faster, so it can't hurt.
Herms Posted November 30, 2010 Author Posted November 30, 2010 Cool. I guess its really trial and error. 10% is a little, feels like its still justs powder lol. I'll try it out tonight. I'm just using a simple star pump, so i think i'll be alright. Just want to make sure my stars dont crumble or get smashed by the break cause there wasnt enough solvent for the binders.
