Oh god thats a crazy plan! Good luck with all that :)

Sounds great! Do you plan on filming the shoot?

Do you not horizontally spike all of your canister shells, or are those salutes I am seeing in there? Some of the shells are horizontally spiked to some degree.
Posted
I spike salutes and inserts shells only vertically, AFAIK it should be done that. But I do spike them also horizontally, if they are star shells.

I'm not 100% clear what you mean by "insert shells". If you mean the smaller shells that go inside larger shells, then yes you can get away with only vertically spiking them as popularized by passfire. If you mean shells that contain only inserts like your serpent, farfalle, or hummer shells then no, they are normally still horizontally spiked. They are not spiked as close as a star shell though. I believe the "normal" amount is about double width. So instead of making little squares, you'd make rectangles about twice as tall as they are wide (assuming the shell is sitting on end). If you're anything like me you just kind of spike until it feels/looks right though.

These shells are all a combination of insert shells, stars and comets. I think what I am trying to say is best illustrated by the two shells on the left. The first break has stars on top and timed reports on the bottom.

If only vertically spiking works for you, I'm not one to change your ways.

Well, I have nothing against horizontal spiking, but I thought it will hurt a break with inserts. If you think it won't, I could start horizontally spike them as well.
Posted

It's probably best to maybe do one each way and see what you like best.

I always horizontally spike my shells, but find I have to be more careful with it in farfalle or shell of shells. I have no real proof, but I do spike them a little closer because I think it makes better rings. For things like hummers or serpents I'm not as careful.

Do you plan on working a job between now & then?????

Yes, if you can call mine "a job". I work 1 day per week, and I can do many stuff I want. I've been pasting shells lately. I always hide them when somebody passes though.

I may not have time because of lectures and university work though.

A little update:

The 3" ball shells. Two are left unpasted, and one unassembled. The unassembled one is the green peony.

The others have their lift cups and they are waiting for the lift charge and electric igniters. I'm receiving the cables for igniters this week, so they will be ready soon.

All the 3" cylinders are ready. Passfires and lift charges are done. They are only waiting for the igniters to be glued on top.

One of the eight 4" ball shells remains unpasted. It's because it will have a green star ring inside and I haven't prepared the stars yet. The others are pasted and wating for fuse priming, lifting charge, cups and igniters. Also, some of them will have salute and scatter star rising effects.

About the wireless firing system, it's waiting for the receiver to be delivered from China. Everything else is done.

The mortars... Well, all the 3" racks are done, but I don't have materials for the 4" yet.

Also, I have to get five more 4" cardboard tubes for mortars. A guy from the province promised me, for some SrCO3 in exchange :).

It's all looking very promising there 50AE!

Shells look great, but I personally would've used heat-shrink over those wires on the connectors of the firing box.. I'm sure it wont matter, I just get paranoid about those close formed connections.

Thanks,

About the connection you are correct. My joints are very reliable though. I'm planning to put a big bead of silicone between the connections on the connector instead of heat shrinks. It's gonna seal quite good.

Yep, that'll do the trick indeed!

I guess in an early stage (development) heatshrink could be more annoying if you had to change a connection. Silicone and cable ties will always do the trick in the end though!

Everything is ready... well almost everything! The damn receiver&transmitter from China isn't here yet, and I'm worried. The rest of the work is done - shells, mortars, racks, wires. The electronic project itself is just waiting for its final part and it will be ready.

Edit: P.S. I made lots of QM, in case I don't receive the stuff in time. I will do classical fusing then.

Edit 2: Photos of completed shells. They are stored in boxes now:

If you can bring it all together it seems to be a pretty promising shoot! I have some ideas for NYE however just some 2" shells and 1.4G cakes. 2" is all I have left of 1.3G from a shoot I got stuck with when the customer backed out at last minute! Oh well more for me.

Couldn't find time to write these days, but awesome news! The stuff arrived, and I've been very busy mounting it, testing it, finishing fireworks and other stuff. It works great, everything is set for tonight!

I wish you guys a happy NYE, be safe and have lots of fireworks!

My NYE was great! Meat, wine, great people, fireworks. The wireless system performed great, the people were very happy of the fireworks and I was satisfied too.

I'm very sorry though, I couldn't film the show :(. Like it was destiny's will or something.. The memory card didn't make good contact inside the socket, and the nice woman was filming on integral memory, about 4mb of short video :(. She didn't realise the video stopped.

Most stuff performed great! I'm really sad I don't have a video though. I can describe how stuff performed though.

Effects the ladies loved the most:

-Chryzanthemum 8 !!!

-Winokur 8, 11 and especially 20 !!!

-Fireflies on cocaine!!! Awesome comp!

-Serpents Al-Fe !

-Zinc granite

-Tourbillions shell

-KClO3 silver streamer

-Blue peonies

All shells performed correctly, with good timing and no flowerpots

The 4" shells had very good big symmetrical breaks.

Some shells (peonies) had stars that didn't ignite (bad prime). It seems chlorate stars with shellac and carbonates have to have a good thick coat of BP.

I have a small video, though it's only the beginning. If you wish to see it, I'll show it.
