A Shining Example of True Craftmanship

Below is a link to some truly amazing rockets and headers. I don't tend to apply superlatives lightly, but the craftsmanship that had to go in to these headers is beyond superb. If I could achieve just one of these effects only once; I'd die a happy man. Shit, I'm happy if my CATOs are below 75%.

I've gone back and watched this multiple times and I still just as amazed as the first time. Remember, these are headers on 1 lb rockets, not mortar launched 8 - 12 inchers.

I got the opportunity to spend about 20 hours on the phone (not all at once!) with TR last year and some this summer but he kept telling me that the rockets were unimportant to him, they were just a delivery vehicle.

The headings, well, that's a whole other story. I don't think I will get one as nice as his.

My goodness! Those ARE impressive. Sigh... it irks me that my next venture would have been rockets. I mean mortars are cool, but self propulsion is the next step!

Yeah, rockets make ring shells and such easy.

If these are 1# rockets, anyone know what size motor Dan uses to lift his 5" can shells? As those are some pretty jaw dropping rockets too.

Does anybody have an idea what the formula of the stars is that are used for the pistil of the rocket at 00:35 ? I really really like the effect and have never seen anything like that in person. Any kind of info would be greatly appreciated.

Some kind of red strobe, since it is a slower strobe then most, I would guess it has rather coarse MgAl, or Mg.

That's all I can tell you, and take it with a grain of salt since I have never done anything including strobes before, or MgAl for that matter.

Wow, yep, have to watch it again! I really wish I could do more rockets...

It kinda looks like a Win20 star when I see it.

Maybe ask that question on Passfire and see what people say?

It does appear to have a little bit of a metallic tail. I'm thinking more along the lines of what updup said. I would assume the mgal/mg would burn longer if bigger.

Want me to ask him?

He might be able to tell, might not.

He doesn't build a lot of shells.

I saw him purchase a large box of ball shells without lift at Tri-State :)

Posted

TR?

He builds everyone from scratch, dont know about ball shells, have never seen him use a commercial shell. He couldn't talk last night but I will call back this morning and see what the strobe stars are made from.

Everyone, keep in mind that there are a lot of people on pyro sites that dont want their names typed into web pages like this one and are VERY insistent about it. The ATF only has to do a name search related to pyro and if you dont have legal storage and manufacturing facilities, you may be subject to investigation.

I am not ashamed of my name and if you want my identity, PM me and I will email you and we can talk, hell, I will give you my address if you mail me something nice but for God's sake, DO NOT publish (post) names of those that dont have your permission to do so.

Already had the cops round to my house asking about some Potassium Perchlorate. Told the truth off the bat and said do you want to confiscate the perc? They said no. I guess they just wanted to find out who I was and see if I looked like a terrorist (!) They both left within 5 mins after asking a few questions. In the UK it seems they don't care if you make a few sparks and pops.

Anyway I agree those rockets are a work of art. So much precision in timings etc. At the moment my 60 30 10 - 3lb Firesmith rockets have a success rate of about 75%. Just need to dial in a bit more reliability and I'll be launching bigger and bigger shells. I can guarantee they will never be as good as these ones though!

Ohh yeah I would really like if you could do so, if I`m then able to reproduce the effect with the chems I have, I promise to share a video :)

I dont have an answer from TR yet but someone close to him answered me and told me it was Blesser #27. I will see if I can find the chems.
