Skycastlefish Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 (edited) About ten years ago, when I was in high school, I walked into our living room and my parents were watching some 2020 or dateline show. It was about people who associate colors with ideas like numbers. I looked at my parents and asked them "what color is the number three to you?" They looked at me like I was crazy. I preceded to tell them the colors I saw1 is white2 red3 blue4 yellow5 green6 dark red (almost a red in the shadows look)7 crystal blueetc... I had gone 16 years thinking that everybody did this. It turns out there is a name for this phenomenon -- Synesthesia. Nobody really knows how many people experience it. Some say 1 in 23, some say 1 in 22,000. I thought I'd make my own poll. I'm wondering if people with synesthesia are drawn to pyro (for obvious reasons.) Please, please be sure to vote if you don't visualize things in this way (and tell us how you do visulize, I'm very interested.) If the only people who vote are the ones who see colors then the info will be worthless. ThanksSCF Edit: Oh yea, people have colors too. Mumbles is a light purple over a deep black, Ralph is red and yellow. Cookieman is violet. Sidewinder is a mellow grey stone color with hints of blue. Same goes for letters and music as well as more abstract things that are difficult to explain. Edited September 15, 2010 by Skycastlefish
dagabu Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Nope, no numbers. I am strangely average....
Skycastlefish Posted September 15, 2010 Author Posted September 15, 2010 (edited) Nope, no numbers. I am strangely average.... Nobody who builds rockets is average ; ) Dagabu, your colors are the same as your current avatar - red, white, and black. Thats interesting b/c you didn't have that avatar a year ago when I first "met" you. Edited September 15, 2010 by Skycastlefish

dagabu Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Sorry, not feeling very touche-feely OK, I guess I am weird.
Twotails Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 yes, 1 is orange, 2 is silver ,3 is a dark dull blue, 4 is a mottled yellow, and so on. for 13 I see yellow. I also asoccate a line pattern with a color, had to explain, but i write in a similer code(if you could call it that) to greg shorthand, were as whole "squiggles" can represent colors, to words. People say i have very messy handwriting, but truth is when i write i revert to a stilized shorthand. Its happened before that my work got passed back to me for being messy, After a while I wrote the teacher a key, this means that, ect. some still didnt get it, but a few did. untill tonight i though i was one of few who saw numbers as colors. Now i have a question for you, when you see somthing(on TV, market) can you smell, or taste it just by sight?
NightHawkInLight Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Nope, nothing here. I've heard of that before though. I've always wondered what it would be like. I'm a little jealous.

Now i have a question for you, when you see somthing(on TV, market) can you smell, or taste it just by sight? @Dagabu - I use the word touche as in the old fencing term. AKA clever hit, or clever remark. So yes, clever and weird! @ Twotails - Awesome!!!! I've never knowingly met someone else who visualizes like this either! For me, it is heavy heavey with numbers, letters, and music. I don't have a strong olfactory response but I do have a spacial placement thing - like you said, hard to explain. Things feel to be somewhere relative to me. For example, when I think of potassium perchlorate the idea feels like it is chest level and to the left, a few inches from my chest. Man, I sound crazy! I'm really not though, this is just how my mind remembers things. I've been playing guitar since I was ten years old, and to this day my family and friends ask how I can remember music. I have no idea because I don't have to try. I see colors and I play them. Do you smell things you see? How do you think this helps you with your hobby? I've finally found the right amount of moisture to add to my pulverone. Some people say things like "the consistancy of brown sugar." I figured out that for me, I just add water until it feels like a yellow blue color. Alright twotails! Woohoo!
Cookieman Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 The only colors I see are on people. This is associated with a persons aura. You have to be either born with the gift or you would have had to practice it at avery early age in life. By channelling through the 7 chakra points of the body and proper breathing and meditating you are able to see the colors better.
TheSidewinder Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Interesting. The only time I saw colors associated with people or numbers was in my hippie days, about 40 years ago. Let's..... leave it at that, shall we?

Rogue Chemist Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 (edited) For some reason it took me far longer than it should to realize that synesthesia is not synthesia, the umbrella company for the czech company that supplied the soviet bloc with semtex. But no, this is the first I have heard of this phenomena. And this is the strangest thing I have read all day "I just add water until it feels like a yellow blue color." dagabu Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Interesting. The only time I saw colors associated with people or numbers was in my hippie days, about 40 years ago. Let's..... leave it at that, shall we? How is it said? "If you remember the 70s, you weren't there." I am completely picture orientated, names, objects, numbers all correlate with pictures in my mind. -Oh, and the voices that bid me to do what they wish-

OneEyeCharlie Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Nope. Hell, I'm just lucky to be able to see at all. If 3 suddenly became Fuschia, I'd start wigging out.

I remember the 70s well. the main themes, Sex, drugs and Rock 'n Roll. I was born April 14,1963 on Easter Sunday. Kennedy was assasinated that year and the titanic sank on the same month and day as my birthday. Coincedense?
Skycastlefish Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 (edited) I was born April 14,1963 on Easter Sunday. Yes, you were born on a Sunday and you joined the APC on a Wednesday. Nighthawk joined on a Thursday. Sidewinder, a Wednesday. Dagabu joined on a Thursday. Mumbles joined on a Friday . This is a learned skill and has nothing to do with Synesthesia, although solving math problems in colors makes it pretty easy to do math in your head. If you guys are interested I can make a tutorial on how to do this. I've impressed more women in more bars with this trick than any clever words I've put together. Of course you don't tell them how you do it. It goes a little something like this... Me: "Oh, your visiting Arizona next month? When are you flying out?"Hot Chick: "The 9th (say next month is October, 2010)"Me: "Ugh, I hate flying on Saturdays."Hot Chick: "What? How did you know that's a Saturday" Wait for it.... yes, there moves the bar stool closer Edited September 16, 2010 by Skycastlefish
NightHawkInLight Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I would be interested in learning that, I get my days mixed up on a weekly basis.

Skycastlefish Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 Math whore Guilty as charged! I'll try to make a tutorial tonight. There are several ways to do it. Some are easier than others. I think the way I do it is the easiest to do quickly in your head. Aside from entertaining people, it is a useful skill to have.
OneEyeCharlie Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Guilty as charged! Dave may have been referring to the woman; not you."Ooooo Mr Skycastlefish. For $50, I will find your Fibonacci sequence fascinating"
Skycastlefish Posted September 17, 2010 Author Posted September 17, 2010 Dave may have been referring to the woman; not you."Ooooo Mr Skycastlefish. For $50, I will find your Fibonacci sequence fascinating"Haha. Who wouldn't? If he said math whores (plural) I just might have caught that one. Although, if I had to sell my soul to something it would probably be math. Ahh, the language of the universe.
dagabu Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 No, I meant what i said I am a shutter whore so don't take it as an insult, any camera is a good camera in my book. I have a Brownie Vacation (210 format) that I still shoot pix of my kids with. You would swear they were taken in the 1960s when looking at the prints.
Updup Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 3 is green for me, I see numbers, letters, words, and stuff all in color... Though I have found colors of words to relate with somthing (e.g. "orange" is orange for me, and alot of words colors are simply a close relation to the color of the first letter) Monday: Light blueTuesday: OrangeWendsday: BlueThursday: GreenFriday: PurpleSaturday: YellowSunday: White/VERY light yellow. I think days of the week are easy to tell exactly what color they are for me, any of you guys see days of the week in clear colors? My sister, and my mother both see letters in color as well (Dad thinks we are all quite odd, and says everthing is simply black), so we often compare our thoughts, funny how alien thier colors seem to me.
