mabuse00 Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 Hi, what size of granulated iron would you recommend for using it in fountains and salutes? I prefere long lasting sparks. I've got 40 mesh Ti sponge here, that stuff is as great as expensive I know iron cannot compete, but i'm loocking for a cheap substitute anyway.
Ralph Posted September 13, 2010 Posted September 13, 2010 I use 325mesh and 100mesh iron in my fountains it lasts surprisingly long (the sparks have more than enough time to swim and begin falling) and it ignites very easily

I sieve out anything finer than 40 mesh and use the courser material in fountains. They look great , too. I've never used iron in salutes so I can't advise there. The finer iron can be used in other things, like sparklers. WSM
Gunzway Posted September 14, 2010 Posted September 14, 2010 100mesh is definitely my favourite. I've made many long burning golden fountains with it that just hit the ground before being extinguished. Got to be careful not to add too much as it is prone to making a lot of slag. It's good to keep it in an airtight container/bag as I find that if it is exposed readily to the air the spark quality definitely becomes worse. Some people even coat their iron. I can't also comment on the use of iron in salutes either.
mabuse00 Posted September 17, 2010 Author Posted September 17, 2010 Thank you for your estimation. I've got stuff that is between 80 and 140 mesh. I'm going to try it out next time.
