mabuse00 Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Hi, what's your experience on that matter? There might be long intervalls, where one has got no time for the hobby. Most chemicals seem to have indefinite shelf lives, but Metal powders do oxidate somehow. I've got some 15mm Bird Bangers ("Moog Vogelschreck") from 1997. As far as i know they contain KClO4/AL. Last year I tested one and i don't think there has been any degradation in power. And these 15mm Hulls sure are not more airtight than most PE bottles are. So i guess Aluminium is not that critical. Magnesium is more ignoble (the right word?) than aluminium... How long can i store these powders, assuming that even that most containers are not 100% airtight? These things are hard to get in my country, so if i find a proper source, is it clever to get some reserve for hard times?Or will - lets say three years of storage - ruin the stuff anyway?
50AE Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 I think MgAl is fine to store, but Mg alone has to be coated, it will degrade with time.
NightHawkInLight Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 I think MgAl is fine to store, but Mg alone has to be coated, it will degrade with time.As long as it is in a proper container Mg will store just fine. All of mine is WW2 German surplus. It's as good as it was back then. Put it in something airtight.
mabuse00 Posted August 17, 2010 Author Posted August 17, 2010 @NightHawkInLight: Where did you get that stuff:blink: I ment Mg in a composition.Yes, of course. But that's irrelevant, I dont intend to store mixtures very long. I meant the pure Magnesium powder. Put it in something airtight. Are normal PEHD Bottles airtight enough?
Siegmund Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Part of the point of using magnalium is that the aluminum oxide protects the rest of the metal, and avoids the need to coat it in comps / protect it so carefully as Mg. But I would think most ALL your chemicals would be stored in airtight containers....
NightHawkInLight Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 A ziploc bag is airtight enough. Magnesium also protects itself with an oxide layer under normal circumstances. Not quite as well as Al, but better than iron. This is not based on proven data, just what I assume based on what I have experienced. I got my Mg from a personal contact. You could get it too if you attend the PGI convention.
