erid Posted August 15, 2010 Posted August 15, 2010 How would I make a piston for a mine? I've seen them but can't find instructions anywhere.
jimbo Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 aren't they just a disc with holes punched through it.
mfstraydog1 Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 Ned has a great teetotaler in skylighter on mines. Here is a link to it. http://skylighter.com/skylighter_info_pages/article.asp?Item=138#art
inonickname Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 For smaller mines, I just use a thick paper disk with holes in it to allow the stars to ignite. Never had a misfire, but for big mines spending the time making a nice piston is probably worthwhile.
50AE Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 (edited) The piston I use for my mines has a pulley shape:Two discs and a small tube, glue them together, and drill some holes through. Edited August 16, 2010 by 50AE

dagabu Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 With fragile stars or comets that are made from soft compounds, use several layers of regular corrugated cardboard glued together with a few holes drilled through the stack. It cushions the load very well.
Ventsi Posted August 16, 2010 Posted August 16, 2010 I have used this method for a very long time with many starmines, it is cheap, easy and works very, very well.
Mumbles Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 If you choose to use Nighthawk's method you may want to consider taping a piece of tissue paper over the disk in order to prevent the lift from migrating into the stars. I personally use a 2 disk method with a wad of newspaper in between.
Ventsi Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I always contain my lift inside a smll nylon baggie. I find it works better.
