Steigede Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 So I usually go to Lowe's to get my potassium nitrate as stump remover. Yesterday I went and couldn't find it anywhere. I then went to walmart, where I've also seen it. No luck. I then went to Home Depot and found some Bonide Stump-out and was pretty annoyed when I got home and found out it's not KNO3. So my question is, does anyone know any other source for KNO3? Was there some sort of law passed and KNO3 based stump removers outlawed? I'm kind of disappointed that I won't be able to make some smoke bombs and fountains for a bonfire tomorrow...
Fly Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 Well if you don't want to buy off the net check your lawn & garden supply.I buy KNO3 15-0-44 fertilizer &it is much cheaper than what your buying. It 99% pure. People use it on tomato plants, so it may be a little harder to find right not,but they can get it for you if you ask. Hope this helped Fly
Steigede Posted July 29, 2010 Author Posted July 29, 2010 Thanks for the tip. I've checked around at garden stores and have never found it as fertilizer. I'll have to call around. I found little 6oz bottles for $3 at a local drugstore.
Seymour Posted July 29, 2010 Posted July 29, 2010 If you are dedicated to this hobby, no doubt you will gladly buy a 25kg bag. This is how it comes for agricultural uses, both for fertilizing fields, and as a hydroponics nutrient. Look for the places nearest you that supply the agricultural industry.
handymanherb Posted July 31, 2010 Posted July 31, 2010 (edited) Spectraide Stump Remover has it too, only homo depot has it in Fla, that's what I used on mine. http://a.imageshack.us/img148/2687/kytrip007.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img156/2687/kytrip007.jpg Edited July 31, 2010 by handymanherb
Kevin4393 Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Try to look around more for the stump removers they are usually at a Lowes ( Home depot only carries that Bonide crap). As far as I know there have been no laws outlawing stump removers.
handymanherb Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Yea Lowe's doesn't have it and I haven't looked at Home Depot lately to see if they still have it. I used Coke cans at first and they melt away and thicker smoke because of the bigger diameter. http://a.imageshack.us/img148/7256/kytrip003.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img149/9647/kytrip005.jpg http://a.imageshack.us/img228/31/kytrip011.jpg Does leave a big burnt spot in the grass for a while
Ventsi Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Thanks for the tip. I've checked around at garden stores and have never found it as fertilizer. I'll have to call around. I found little 6oz bottles for $3 at a local drugstore. You know I used to frequently get it the same way you did, stump remover and encountered the same problem. Ask around and do some searching for a pottery store somewhere around you. I'm able to get my KNO3 for less than $1/lb this way.
Ventsi Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 You got me there, if I could find those bags localy without the $44 for shipping I'd as happy as a bee. The closest pottery shop is an hour drive and sells 50lb bags for $55. Unfortunatelly there is some debree in the KNO3.
Mumbles Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Champion brand does have some debris in it, but I've never had a problem with the crystaline stuff. The prills are both a pain in the ass to grind, and they tend to absorb water over the years.

Algenco Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 The Champion greenhouse grade I picked up last week is extremely fine and clean
dagabu Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 In my limited use of GG KNO3, both the Hafia and Champion are pretty equal. I have no issues with either.
