Mumbles Posted January 26, 2006 Posted January 26, 2006 Is there anything you guys feel is missing or should be changed on the new software? I'm working on a skin that looks like the old forum. Also on the agenda is taking off the "bohegeha" banner and replacing it with our own. Post count changing is being looked into. As it currently stands, it totally messes up all the board statistics.
Kilo_G Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 LOL, ya my post count and your's (and the other top 30 posters) too for that matter. I know you know that I'm not all about the post count but there are up sides to it... Newbs know who knows what. The forum doesn't look like it just started yesterday. We have atleast a number to represent the hunders (or thousands) of usually well thought out posts we've made. Downside, according to you, is that it screws with the forum stats, whatever those are/do. I dunno. Anyone else agree with me?
K-9 Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 The post count matter was actually something that came to my mind. Of course not that a number matters, but as Kilo said - sometimes it just looks better for the reasons stated. Besides that, I think it all looks quite nice. Great job.
optimus Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 I've never fully understood why anyone would be bothered about their post counts. Surely people can make their minds up about someone's level of knowledge/experience by reading a small random selection of their posts. I for one wouldn't want someone to formulate an opinion on me based on how many posts I've made - for all they know every single one of them could've been a useless one-liner. All I can deduce is that having a massive post count gives people a warm feeling of belonging and potentially false sense of authority. Mabye I'm way off the mark here, but that's how I see it...
Boomer Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 Could the old post count be added on the left, as "previous posts" under "join date" or something ? This might even be automated (via an EXCEL list from the old board's statistic - if that feature exists). Or, something like "around since ... " to show Mumbles is no noob who joined yesterday BTW what is the "rep power" under your name on E+W? Reputation, randomly asigned by NBK? And I liked the old smilies better, they were more clear. These are even described in k3wlspeak ("ph34r")! Will the new skin fill my screen width? This one wastes 3 inches. What about a spell check? No more copy/paste/copy/pasteitback via WORD.
_DB_ Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 It would be kinda cool if this new forum was never mentioned to the public! We could be so secretive.
Mumbles Posted January 27, 2006 Author Posted January 27, 2006 The smilies can be changed. Hell, I can probably save the ones from the old board and put them up here. I admit, I don't like these as much either. I'll look into putting a new line in with the post count, location, member number stuff on the side under your names for true number of posts. Just have the current post count + the old one. It may be kinda hard though since I know absolutly jack shit about coding. Please, if anyone is familiar with the software and can manipulate it, step forward. Trust me, me out of anyone wants my post count back. I spent over two solid years on that forum, and posted my ass off. I made Rhodium look like a chump with my amount of posting. Granted, he had 14,000 some posts, but he had longer than 2 years to do so. I think more like 10. About the rep power. There is an option for warnings. There are two ways to set this up. Either you can do it in a negative way. Meaning there is a quota or something of what you can get. Then there is the karma way. If any of you were members of the Hive, you know what this is. You can give or take karma points. Like if someone posts something amazing you can give them karma points, and something shitty, they can get negative karma points. I think this is something that may be considered. It could be a way to show seniority and knowledge without having to up post counts. About the size of the forum. I know I run my computer at it's maximum resolution so I can fit more stuff. However, I'm not sure how to change it. I will look into it. Maybe I can contact RichardH from UKR and see how to do it, or if there is anyway. Perhaps he has worked with this specific version of the software. They actually pay for theirs.
Pyrohawk Posted January 28, 2006 Posted January 28, 2006 Is there any way to brighten up the words in posts? The dull grey words against the deep red board is messin with my eyes.... All of the other words are a nice bright white but the ones in posts is this dull grey that drives me crazy! I may be changing my skin to the Invision.....
somebody Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 When using a poll, is the topic bumped up everytime?Because that really annoyed me.
Swany Posted January 29, 2006 Posted January 29, 2006 My brother and his wife's brother are both exellent coders. One designs proccesser compilers(don't think this will help much), and the other is a teenager who is the stereotype for computer genius. I'll talk to him about your post line dilema thing. When is the forum going to be unveiled?
PyroPicasso Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 Hello I was Dr.pyro on the old forum. I cant believe the new forum is up after so long of a wait. I think a Disclaimer similar to the old one on the APC a long time ago might be a good idea.Other than that it looks great.
Chaz Posted February 1, 2006 Posted February 1, 2006 Testing white text. EDIT: You're right, white text is a lot better, I'll try and change it. EDIT2: Ok, I've changed the font to make it brighter. I didnt change it all the way to white, because that made it the same colour as the member information on the left hand side, and it didnt look right for everything to be the same. I also changed the new/no new post icons from the star thingy design to a flame, what does everyone think?
BigBang Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Which post icons are you speaking of. As of now I see blocks for what I think you are speaking of. White tixt is good for this background, but does it have to be so cramped, it must be like size 8 font! Is there any way to allow for larger font, say 10, and not dragging out the posts. I liked the size on the old forum personally.
Draco_Aster Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Is anybody else getting a blank page with Parse error: parse error, unexpected '?' in /home/apcadmin/public_html/forums/sources/lib/usercp_functions.php on line 718 when they try to access their controls?
Kilo_G Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Yes, me. But I havn't tried restarting my computer and trying again. Mumbles mentioned to me that he has had the same error before for a couple hours but that it went away. Hurry up and wait.
Pyrohawk Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 I am getting the exact same error message as draco...... Earlier today I was getting that error for every page so I had to leave and come back later. Now its just the My Account page. Chaz said he lightened up the words in posts so I would like to switch back to the original skin and see if it helped (I'm currently in the IPB skin) but I can't switch skins!
Chaz Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Oops, that was me applying an update, looks like it didnt work. It should be fine now.
h0lx Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 You could disable the font, font size and font color tags and replace them with sub- and superscript tags..
FrKoNaLeaSh1010 Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Just to let the mods know I was getting errors when trying to add members to my address book. All of my other controls are fine except that part.
Mumbles Posted February 2, 2006 Author Posted February 2, 2006 Adding people works fine for me. I dunno what to tell you to do. Try it again I suppose. There are of course going to be bugs that need to be worked out.
FrKoNaLeaSh1010 Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Yeah there is of course gonna be a few bugs that need to be worked out. As far as the address book thing goes....i tried it again and it worked fine with no error this time. It seems there are just a few random errors that occur but when you try it again at a later point....it works fine.
justanotherpyro Posted February 4, 2006 Posted February 4, 2006 I think we should bring over spudgunpyroboy's willow alternatives thread from the old APC. Very useful information.
keepkool79 Posted February 5, 2006 Posted February 5, 2006 I just want to say nice job to everyone that is involved in keeping this thing going. This new site looks great. I am sure it was time consuming. Keep up the good work. If anyone needs any help with this site, please feel free to ask. Thanks,
Star_Roller Posted February 10, 2006 Posted February 10, 2006 I actually like that Karma meter idea it would work well and show who knows their stuff! Also I can't say how much I would love that karma rating!I love the looks of the new site GREAT WORK YOU GUYS!
kwstag Posted February 13, 2006 Posted February 13, 2006 I really like the site, and layout options, they're fun to mess with. I do like the idea of limiting access to the HE section so kewls won't get in and ask stupid AP Q's etc... Props +1
