madmax247 Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 (edited) I was wondering, since such a thread doesnt exist (or at least thats what i know from checking), id like to know what kind of hot primes there are out there for lighting harder stars like emerald green or ruby red. Im having some issues and as many will know and fear, potassium dichromate is a known carcinogen and many will avoid it. So which other hot primes are there that can be used to avoid step priming? I understand in some cases step priming is unavoidable but in some cases it can save time. Heres a hot(ish) prime i know of already: Meal: 77Magnalium: 8KP: 10Dextrin: 5 The above formula seems to work with ruby red but not emerald green. Edited June 30, 2010 by madmax247
Ventsi Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 There are at least half a dozen threads on primes, some searching would have helped you.
Mumbles Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 You will probably want to check out these threads, and the following google search key words: Pinball PrimeVeline super primeFencepost Prime http://www.amateurpyro.com/forums/topic/4896-amount-of-metal-per-batch-of-prime/page__p__64123__hl__Primes__fromsearch__1entry64123http://www.amateurpyro.com/forums/topic/4022-recommend-a-good-prime/page__p__63957__hl__Primes__fromsearch__1entry63957http://www.amateurpyro.com/forums/topic/4838-primes/page__p__63115__hl__Primes__fromsearch__1entry63115http://www.amateurpyro.com/forums/topic/4738-a-little-help-with-prime-comps-please/http://www.amateurpyro.com/forums/topic/4181-priming-stars/page__p__58746__hl__Primes__fromsearch__1entry58746http://www.amateurpyro.com/forums/topic/3810-silicon-based-primes/page__view__findpost__p__52751__hl__Primes__fromsearch__1 I'm not saying they will all be helpful, but it will get you on the right track.
dagabu Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 A very well known hot prime. Pinball is another. Hot Igniter Primes:Name: Fence-post primeSource: Eugene Yurek Potassium Nitrate 65 Charcoal Airfloat 12 Sulfur 10 Diatomaceous Earth 5 Silicon, 325 mesh 5 Charcoal, spruce, ball milled 3 Tare: Total: 100%
Peret Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 What role does the Diatomaceous Earth play in fencepost? It's just an inert filler. Does it play a part in the texture?
Mumbles Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 It definitely provides some texture. The originator claims that it's microscopic pores "soak" in the molten silicon via capillary action, and holds it to the surface of the star to help enhance ignition.
dagabu Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 A chemist has spoken to the open air space of the DE being able to funnel the fire to the mix more efficiently as well. I use glass bubbles instead and it works very well.
TrueBluePyro Posted July 1, 2010 Posted July 1, 2010 Since this is a thread for primes, I might add my simple one.All I do to prime my fuses is layer a small amount of NC on top of the fuse and than dip it in a mixture of crushed up granulated black powder, with a small amount of titanium and silicon powder. Very simple and seems to work every time for me.
TrueBluePyro Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 I also added a quick tutorial on my website if anyone wants to see. http://www.truebluepyro.com/tutorials/prime_time_fuse.htmlTo go even futher you could add black match as well.
dagabu Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Will, only the last pic is visible on your tut, broken links?
Ralph Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Will, only the last pic is visible on your tut, broken links? I was having that problem earlier (when I first viewed it) now they all show up
ExplosiveCoek Posted July 3, 2010 Posted July 3, 2010 Will, only the last pic is visible on your tut, broken links? Same here
Ralph Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Same here did some poking around turns out you guys are using an inferior web browser try chrome best and most secure web browser and generally awesome and it displays pics fierfox wont
ExplosiveCoek Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 I like FF with it's add-ons and stuff, so I'm not going to change. Normally I don't have many problems with viewing pictures.
Ralph Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 chrome is like firefox but with all the add ons already installed I use both both update them selves automatically firefox has a bitch when it does chrome does it with out any user imput each to his own I guess
optimus Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 All the dead image links have a '\' instead of a '/' in the URL: http://www.truebluepyro.com/tutorials/tutimages\p1.jpg should be http://www.truebluepyro.com/tutorials/tutimages/p1.jpg Most of the content on the site is broken for me - apart from all the ads... they work fine... Mabye chrome doesn't mind the broken links, not going to make me switch over from Firefox : )
Arthur Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Prime comps must make slag as they burn, the slag is what passes heat to the star. Blue comps need to burn cool so they use gas producing comps to get the flame heat OUT, Prime comps make slag to keep the heat IN. Silicon metal makes silica, Diatomaceous Earth is just slag that gets hot. If you get a flash of hot air on your hand it's annoying, if you get a tiny piece of molten plastic on your hand it really burns and hurts. Same principle with primes. Hot gas passes by hot slag burns.
