AdmiralDonSnider Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 I´ve recently started out making whistle mix by mixing an Öztap formula based on potassium chlorate (no I do not plan to stick to this in the long run). My goal was to produce simple tubular whistles. What I know from autopsies of commercial whistles, there is only a really small portion of comp compacted in a tube. This - however - manages to produce several seconds of a loud whistling sound. My 1g benzoate whistle also worked, but the duration was only one second at max, although it had about the same thickness of comp pressed in. This leads me to the question if there are any comps optimized for plain tubular whistle, whereas others serve well for propelling applications such as rockets. Öztap discerns three classes of whistle comps by their strenght. The chlorate-benzoate comp was class 3 (highest). I assume this would rather make a good rocket than prolonged sound. Does anyone know which comps are usually employed in commercial tubular whistles? I assume these are perchlorate based and low on fuel.
al93535 Posted June 13, 2010 Posted June 13, 2010 We use 70% potassium perchlorate and 30% potassium benzoate for our commercial whistles. Screened three times through a 60 mesh or so. Yes you want to press so not more then half the tube is full... make sure to PRESS not ram whistles. We also add 8% of sponge titanium as well. Granulate the whistle with the titanium and let it dry before pressing. This way it makes it less likely that any Ti will be caught between the tube and ram.
