PyroMan LTU Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Hello, What is the best way to ignite a go-getters (swimming stars) or whistles in a mine or a shell?I made a 1" mine with 4x9mm whistle inserts (just a tube with pressed whistle mix) I inserted BM in each one - none of them ignited. I'm also thinking of making some AP/MG go getters and have an idea form a pyro show to make a device like this: In a 12mm tube press a 1cm or more of go getter mix, then some KP prime, BP, and C8 to the top, BP so shot from the mine they should leave a nice charcoal tail and when the apogee is reached they jet into random direction. This effect may not be a problem, but how do I ignite directly? Form burst, lift etc. PyroMan
Ralph Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I ignite my Mg fuelled (mostly nitrate oxidised with KP as well) go-getters with black watch that I insert while they are still wet they seem to light every time. none of your whistle insets ignited :S ? I have found they work with out and prime at all but when doing things properly I dip bm in some slurry and wack that down into the whistle tube
PyroMan LTU Posted June 9, 2010 Author Posted June 9, 2010 Ok - I will try bm with slurry for whistles, and for go getters I cant use BM becouse composition is with ammonium perchlorate :?
Mumbles Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I think people have been using that fast paper visco to fuse go-getters. Apparently it is KP based. Alternatively, you can make KP match. I've heard go getters are impervious to KNO3 as long as the acetone/xylene is dry, but I wouldn't want to find out the hard way that it is wrong. One thing about go-getters. I notice you said "pressed". Go getters are usually dissolved into a slurry, and wet filled. Make sure your solvents are bone dry, and you'll probably want to protect your Mg. Danny Creagan found that whistle spolettes light best with some prime. You might want to try to press a small increment of BP on top of the whistle. Another trick is to press and confine the blackmatch into the last increment. This requires a rammer with a flat edge milled onto it. It comes in handy for saeittines too.
PyroMan LTU Posted June 9, 2010 Author Posted June 9, 2010 Maybe I will make some kp match and use it as an igniter.. I think it is for the best, and it doesn't require much KP since I will be making only few hundred grams batch. Hold on, what about chinese green visco? I have from 2mm to 3mm OD. is it's core made out of KP based mix? since if I put in my acetone dissolved paste the fuse it will melt a bit and mix with the composition, but as you said it must b ok, even if it is with KNO3. Yeah, I don't know why did I say press I am going to disolve and fill with slurry like you said About whistles, in my post above I said BM, I meant sulfur-less BM, becouse there is a slight problem about BP.. I use a chlorate composition since it is way cheaper for me and works perfectly. I made my own composition according to the chemical reaction, I figured that KClO3 has even less oxygen than perchlorate, and if the fastest proportion is 76/23 with perchlorate, I ended up with KClO3/Nabenz - 80/20 +0.7% iron oxide. So I shouldn use bp here, maybe I will make Nitrate-charcoal-aluminium prime for this occasion. I know that chlorate mix is very dangerous, so I compressed it into tubes using slight presure. BTW thanks, Mumbles, Ralph, for ideas PyroMan
PyroMan LTU Posted June 10, 2010 Author Posted June 10, 2010 (edited) BTW, one more question about the whistle mix. I made it with vaseline and "solvent 646" it has 60% toluene and 15% n-butanol. O don't know the rest of the solvent's additives.. so is it safe to use it, especialy with chlorate? Edited June 10, 2010 by PyroMan LTU
Mumbles Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Without knowing the rest, it is impossible to know if it is safe. From what little I can find about it, it seems it doesn't have any solid components. From what I know about it, it should be safe as everything should evaporate away. Chinese green visco likely has KNO3 in it, so you'd probably want to avoid it.
