my first 3 inch shells

Recommended Posts

Guys,

I launched my first 3 inchers this weekend and they came out well. I think I should have used a tad less time fuse. This time around I will be using faster willow charcoal on my rice hulls and will be making 4 and 5 inch shells. These were launched somewhere in the Adirondack mountains over a lake near my friends house:

Let me know what you think!

The emerald green burned pretty fast, but they looked good to me.

I think you should build more of 'em! Nice stuff! The burst on the second shell looked real nice.

Was the burst straight BP coated hulls or did you use a booster?

thanks for the feedback.. I used black powder coated rice hulls with about a gram of nitrate flash. However, the charcoal i milled was regular airfloat charcoal but now I will be using willow charcoal exclusively. Hopefully that will give me even better breaks! Im not sure if I should make my stars any bigger for the 4 and 5 inch shells that I am making. All I did for my stars was pump them with a 3/8 inch pump and cut em in half so they are as long as they are wide.

By the way, i made a bunch of crappy 2 inch plastic shells too. Most of them flowerpotted, lol.

I dont want to steal this thread, but my question fits perfectly here.

I just ordered

20 3" paper hemis

25' 1/4" time fuse

2" gummed kraft tape

2 18" HDPE mortars

is there anything else I need to start upgrading to a 3" shell?

For 3" shells I use 3/4" gummed tape, 2" is a little long for what you're going to use it for. Also, get some 2" long by 1/4" ID (doesen't really need to be 2" long, but I cut them in half) paper tubes to put your time fuse through, since the time fuse holes in paper hemis are a little big for the 1/4" time fuse (on my hemis they are anyways).

@PyroChris Nice shells! Can't wait to see more from you soon, looks like you're off to a great start, keep up the great work!

Perhaps you would need a method of making stars that produce suitable sized stars for a 3" shell. Could be sorted out easy if you roll or cut your stars, but if you’re pumping you need a new star pump if you don’t already have that size. That's all I can possibly think of. I personally prefer traditional paste methods over gummed kraft tape, but that's a matter of personal preference. More burst, more star composition and if applicable, a bigger test site.

Maybe tissue paper? With bigger shells it becomes more important to separate the burst from the stars in order to get good symmetry and good compaction.

Good job. I too have found that good strong burst as well as lift is a lot better with Willow. That is if your not gong to be using booster. Your on the right track...

I like your shells, my only thoughts are; use a little booster or paste a few more layers to obtain a larger break. Nice job.
