Well here goes nothing...

Name of composition: Deadfx sparking mixture #1

Composition Type: Sparking

Creator: Me Deadfx

Color/Effect: Yellow sparks (There is no noticeable flame. I have only tested this mixture during the day)

The Composition: (by weight)

60% KClO3

20% Ti90%/Vn6%/4%Al powder particle range +20 mesh -100 mesh

15% Cream of Tartar

2.5% Guar Gum

2.5% Xanthan gum

+ ? water as solvent

Any Precautions/Incompatabilities: The only compatibility issues that I am aware of arise from the usage of Potassium Chlorate. Ie be very cautious of Ammonium or Sulfur compounds. I do not know if Potassium Perchlorate or pure Titanium powder can be used as a substitute. I do not know the optimal amount of water needed for this mixture. I am still in the process of testing this out. After drying the pyrotechnic composition is very crumbly.

Procedure/Preparation:

Every single chemical except for Potassium Chlorate is measured out in the same container. I used a small paper cup and chop stick to hold and stir the mixture. After any lumps are crushed, Potassium Chlorate and water are added in. The mixture is stirred for a minute and is left out to dry. Recommended dry time 1 day unless it’s really warm/dry outside then 12 hours.

What type of composition is this?

What do you use it for?

'Sparking' is prettty vague!

Well my idea is to make a morning glory like sparkler as seen here. http://www.patfire.com/images/collage_sparklers.jpg The mixture burns at a stable enough rate that I feel comfortable having a reasonable amount(1-5grams) a few inches away from my hand. I don't know what would be considered "comfortable" for others but you could stick the stick in the ground and watch it burn.

Anyways the paste stuff would applied to a stick and be left out to dry for a day.

Have you tried making stars out of this comp. or do you think it is a little too sow for that purpose?

I have not tried making stars out of this. My equipment/chemicals/knowledge/room or space[neighbors] limit me on what I can do.

Just get a syringe (1/2" ID) and cut the end off and you got yourself a star pump. Add the comp in the syringe and press it down on a hard surface. Push it out and let it dry (couple days). There you go.

If you meant you didn't want to make a star gun or something like that to test it just burn it on the ground. If it is hard and not crumbly and doesn't burn too slowly it should be ok as a star.
