dagabu Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 (edited) i will go the website, but if i dont become "a member" can i just fly out there on a weekend to attend the nightly shows? I really want to go!! Are you guys going to have an amateur pyro meetup during the day? Chris Yes, you can see the shows with the rest of the paying public on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. There are no public shows on weekends. All day, every day will be amateur pyro meetups! That is the reason for the PGI, amateurs doing pyro and learning the craft and the safety. If you dont become a member or attend the convention, you will miss mass rocket launches, Dr. X (OMG!) and the All Stars show. It will cost $240.00 for the week for membership and Convention passage. Mumbles Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 You definitely can come and watch the shows. Any sort of meet up would have to happen off site, as you could have a hard time getting in without a badge. To clarify what Dagabu crossed out. Technically to attend the convention, you have to be a member by June 1st. Robin is pretty nice about letting people in late though. July 1st is the deadline for cheaper rates. I don't have my stuff in front of me, but I want to say it's $150 before July 1st, and $185 afterwards. I would suggest seeing the Sunday show. Rumor has it, that is going to be awesome. It's hard to pick a favorite night. The first and last day of convention have the best displays. The middle of the week has the best competition though. You can get there starting at probably 3 or 4 in the afternoon, so you can at least watch set up and stuff like that. They normally have competition both before and after the display, as well as open shooting until the wee hours of the night (in theory). [Edit] Maybe the opening display is on Monday. I don't really recall.
dagabu Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Man! Do I need to make another correction to my post? You are right, I just checked, the opening display is Sunday night. "I would suggest seeing the Sunday show. Rumor has it, that is going to be awesome." Hmmmm, why would that be? Know anybody that will be part of the opening ceremony?
angelluis Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Sorry Mumbles, the deadline is July 1st this year. It was June 1st last year and Robin let anyone in (she did me). There are also late slots available with no end date. There are even some admissions going to be granted the Saturday before as well. Brain fart, I was thinking the convention, sorry. Robin is still taking membership applications but you had better get a member to vouch for you. I will be teaching the Introduction to Timed Reports on Tuesday in the small teaching tent at the track. I really cant wait to join the pgi its just the money situation right now really tight but soon I know this.I am pretty sure they have shell building seminars?
Mumbles Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Pyro isn't a cheap hobby, I can tell you that right now. If you're interested, the seminar information for this year is still on the PGI website.
erid Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 If you dont become a member or attend the convention, you will miss mass rocket launches, Dr. X (OMG!) and the All Stars show. It will cost $240.00 for the week for membership and Convention passage. Who is Dr. X? I've seen some videos of it (or him) with several large salutes.
dagabu Posted October 3, 2010 Posted October 3, 2010 Who is Dr. X? I've seen some videos of it (or him) with several large salutes. Pyro aint cheep, that is so true. Dr X is a pseudonym for a group of people that wish to remain anonymous that build and display large salutes. Enjoy, dont ask.
asilentbob Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 Short reply:Lots of the videos show activities that are way to dangerous. But we should not tell youtube to be the judges as they have no experience in the matter. Flag to your hearts content... However... remember you can't see whats on the other side of the camera. If it looks like its in the middle of no where... who is to say that it is legal or illegal? Do you personally know if there is a burn ban on? Do you know if they did it all in one day on-site or did they transport? Maybe they own the land and are licensed. Do you know their intent? To the un-informed a HE charge made by some highly knowledgeable SMDB member would look similar to a "kewl" bomb. So be careful what you wish for.
dagabu Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 Case in point: I witnessed an HE disposal this summer that heaved tons of top load into the air. On youtube, this would have looked like a k3wl but it was the safest and the only accepted way to dispose of HE in the environment we were in. Good point Silentbob
NightHawkInLight Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 Case in point: I witnessed an HE disposal this summer that heaved tons of top load into the air. On youtube, this would have looked like a k3wl but it was the safest and the only accepted way to dispose of HE in the environment we were in. Good point Silentbob...If I know the indecent you're talking about, it surely wasn't safe - spoken by one who was dodging melon size chunks of clay and rock without warning 300+ yards away. Everyone made it out safely, but things just weren't thought out as well as they could have been. Anyway, that's in the past and the mistakes made were apologized for. Found the video:
dagabu Posted October 4, 2010 Posted October 4, 2010 I would rather not comment on the alleged mistakes and was not part of the decision making on this one but the method was correct, the issues were what the composition of the top-load was and the lack of warning, other then that, the method was correct. The point is that anyone watching this video could very well assign it as a k3wl video as well and I generally leave it to the watchers to decide if they think it is worth tagging or not.
MadMax Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I am an American and damn proud of it! The fact is that in this country most of us take for granted the fact that without a license and tom dick or jane can buy the components to build powerful explosive devices. The problem I can foresee is if enough people get caught doing stupid things or getting into trouble or get hurt that will draw the attention of the media and stricter laws will follow. As of now the freedom to buy these things unlicensed is a good .thing because I believe it gives people the opportunity to try out pyrotechnics without having to first commit to getting licensed. If that changes there will be far fewer newcomers in the field which hurts pyrotechnics as a whole. I fear it's only a matter of time before laws change. I see all kinds of posts by foreigners stating that they can't afford potassium perchlorate because the price is outrageous or can't get it at all. Then they resort to other "alternatives" which may me much less safe. I don't want to see America get like that too! I don't know what can be done to stop it though. The very right we're trying to protect may be it's own undoing.
