Looking to try to make some 8 10 12" shells, possibly cylinders, I'm looking for some ball park dimensions.

Is there a general rule for the diameter of the card disk at the bottom of the shell say diameter minus an inch or half an inch or.....

Would a single break cannister be as high as it's diameter, or more or less? No I'm not looking at Maltese style!

Mortars to 16" came my way recently, so must play!!

The traditional sizes are 7.25" for an 8" shell, 9" for a 10" shell, and 11" for a 12" shell. I'd imagine they are around as tall as they are wide, but I've never made any. It really depends on what you put inside. It's not all that common to just see them filled with stars, rather being packed with comets, insert shells, and other insert devices.

Be warned that I've heard it's not a great idea to fire large canister shells (even single break) from fiberglass mortars, if that is indeed what you have.

Hopefully I will make a single part shell, and possibly only a crown willow, but then I want to try some multibreaks, heart, star, triangle, cube etc.

I would have tried ball shells but the price of hemis in the UK is OTT. (£35.00 for a 16" hemi :( )

would fiberglass be ok to fire single break 5" canister shells? Mine just came in the mail.

Oh yeah, you're fine. You can fire a single break pretty much anything from fiberglass. I've fired two and three break 5" canisters from fiberglass. I still will do two break, but with my new 5" steel guns, I'll be switching to those for the bigger guys.

Do you recall the weight of your 5'' multibreak shell's Mumbles?

The 8" shell of shells in my gallery had 10 ea. 3" can shells in it. Which was 2 rows of 5 shells plus a color break. It weighed about 12 pounds and was twice in length or a little more than the diameter. There is also some info for a spiking pattern in the tutorial section for an 8 inch as well.

It really depends on what they have inside of them. 5" single break canisters with stars weigh around 3lbs. My 5" double breaks usually have some inserts, and weigh 6lbs or so. This would be for a sun and planet, maybe 5 timed spider, etc. I could cut some weight out if I used sawdust instead of clay to pack in inserts. A few of the longer ones I made were a bit over 7lbs. I've only made a couple 5" triple breaks, all very similar. They weighed around 8.5lbs. I would prefer to light them from steel, but I've seen them go successfully from buried fiber glass.
