AdmiralDonSnider Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 What kind of fuse is it that is described by Shimizu in FAST as "hand made fuse" (Fig.89, p.238) used for spherical shells? It looks like a spolette with a thinner powder core. In the materials section Shimizu only mentions various kinds of bickford fuses, which are not normally referred to as "hand made"... Does anyone know how to make these?
PyroMan LTU Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 Hello, I am not sure, he doesn't describe it much, but, I believe, It is like a small spolette. Come to think of it, it doesnt matter much if you're spolette is 5 or 10mm ir dia. bouth will burn the same period of time, just thicker will ignite more easily (if not primed, and it is somewhat more reliable). I mean, I have never heard anything else being used inside a shell as a timer, and I dont think it could be anything better then spolette, if it is "handmade". PyroMan
AdmiralDonSnider Posted April 13, 2010 Author Posted April 13, 2010 Thanks PyroMan. Doesn´t seem there is a lot of info around about these... anybody has something to add?
Seymour Posted April 15, 2010 Posted April 15, 2010 (edited) Thanks PyroMan. Doesn´t seem there is a lot of info around about these... anybody has something to add? I don't have my copy with me, but from memory he described a fuse which was used prior to the introduction of factory made bickford safety fuse in to Japan. A long piece of paper is smeared with a BP type paste. This piece of paper is then rolled in to a 'cord' which is then tightly bound with twine. It would then dry, probably taking quite a while! I have no idea what page this is on, but in my version I seem to remember it being somewhere quite deep in, perhaps just before he discusses the Japanese 'starmine'. Edited April 15, 2010 by Seymour
