Cholrinated stuff.....

Hi,

Other than pyro suppliers, where do you get solid chlorinated hydrocarbons?

I have tried desperately to find 'parlon', ive searched for 'parlon', 'pergut', 'isoprene', 'chloroprene', 'polychloroprene', choronated rubber. Ive tried to find chlorowax, under just about every name under the sun. Where the hell does this stuff come from?! No places I've called know what I'm talking about.

So what sort of things is this stuff (parlon, chlorowax etc) used for in real life (i.e. non pyro)? what sort of places could sell it in less than 100 ton quantities, and in powder form? Even PVC powder, something you'd think wouldn't be uncommon, nope, apparently it doesn't exist! Please help!

Jesse you live in the same state as diversehobbies they have parlon for a good price

as for common uses things like hexachloro benzene was used as a pesticide till it was banned

saran used to be used in glad wrap till it was shown to be a carcinogen its also found in some paints even today

Ralph I know diverse has it, thats why I said "Other than pyro suppliers". Where does he get it though? I prefer to be independent from 'specialist' suppliers. What is parlon (or chlorowax) used for other than pyro, hence what sort of places might stock such things.

PVC is available BUT only in BIG quantities! I used to work in a factory using PVC, we had a tanker or two each day just delivering powder PVC. If you search for emulsion or suspension PVC suppliers you may find one prepared to sell you a tonne as a small order! Then you need a loading bay and a pallet truck to get the delivery off the truck.

For the chems we want it's often best to buy a small batch from a known supplier to the hobbyist.

Parlon is used as a swimming pool coating. It can be bought in 50lb bags. Usually these suppliers also carry some electrodes for swimming pool cleaning, you might have a look at those if you ever plan on making chlorates yourself.

As for PVC, this is sold as grains and as so called PVC milk. The latter has an average particle size expressed in micron, so try to avoid buying that at all costs. The granular form is used for making various things in the polymer industry, so that would be the most obvious place to look. It probably comes in huge quantities, but is dirt cheap too.

It is probably more economic to buy from a specialized seller, unless you either see a way to get through 25 kilograms or plan on reselling it.

like i said they arnt really used much most chlorinated organics are toxic and or carcinogenic to a degree. the chemical formula for parlon is (C4H6Cl2)n I searched for ages and ages for it and never found anything(this was before it was available)

when I looked into buying PVC (which is cheaper than parlon) they would sell me a ton at $5 per killo (including delivery and everything)

Outside of polymers, a lot of these things are used in the fire protection industry. Well, they're additives for plastics, fibers, and coating that introduce some fire protective qualities due to Cl2 and HCl being produced and smothering the fire. This is one of the primary uses of solid Chlorowax. You may want to contact some companies who use powdered PVC or Saran or any other chlorine donor to see if you can buy a bag from them. Going directly to the source will likely lead you to the ton + quantities.
