drtoivowillmann Posted March 22, 2010 Posted March 22, 2010 Dear Friend: today I have questions: 1st) Cherry bombs, instead of flash powder made of pure dragon-egg-mix like composition and nothing else ? 2nd) stars, made of pure dragon-egg-like mix with titanium that burst like small round shells ? Must be from china. Anyone knows about it ? Even ideas about the compositions they are made of ? Thanks: Toivo
Seymour Posted March 23, 2010 Posted March 23, 2010 1st) Cherry bombs, instead of flash powder made of pure dragon-egg-mix like composition and nothing else ? From pulling a few of these apart back before they were banned in NZ, they were quite simply two small cardboard hemispheres half filled with ordinary primed dragons eggs, and burst with a dusting of fine powder. Due to tjhe fairly quiet burst, and the fact that the hemispheres seperated cleanly, I doubt the fine powder burst was any more than BP mill dust, and no more than 0.25g. 2nd) stars, made of pure dragon-egg-like mix with titanium that burst like small round shells ? I've seen these discussed a few times recently. My understanding is that they are stars with a dragon egg as a core, with a composition rolled over the dragon egg, which smolders, forming a hot melt high in Titanium over the dragon egg. This composition provides the delay, and when the dragon egg explodes, it blasts the melt, scattering the hot Titanium in the air. Common sense would suggest that the dragons eggs are on the large side, and formulated with the correct MgAl particle size to crack just once. http://creagan.net/fireworks/compositions.html#cracklingflowers The above page has a composition for the titanium, smoldering mix.
drtoivowillmann Posted March 29, 2010 Author Posted March 29, 2010 Dear FrienD: Thanks, very helpful ! Anyone else with such fine suggestions ??? Greetings: Toivo
dagabu Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 We have them here, they are called Dragon Balls and I steal the eggs for cores all of the time. They are just like Seymour says, a very small amount of what looks like 7FA and the rest is eggs. D
NightHawkInLight Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 http://creagan.net/fireworks/compositions.html#cracklingflowers The above page has a composition for the titanium, smoldering mix.Ok, now that I gotta try. The idea of a dragon egg in a smoldering layer of metal comp is too cool. I'm sure obtaining the proper thickness of the smoldering layer will cause me issues. Bring on summertime.
TheEskimo Posted March 29, 2010 Posted March 29, 2010 Ohhh...I love those balls. They're sold around here as "Crackle Balls". Buy several boxes of 'em after the 4th, and get all the great deals. I guestimate that I can get about 1/2 pound of dragon eggs for about 15 bucks, and no work:) I consider that a fair trade for not having to buy Bismuth trioxide at 30$/lb, or working w/ the red lead.
