Arthur Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 I have some Indian professional cylinder shells but their lift is very irregular some rise to 500feet some rise to 5 feet ! Now I can't simply put these in the dustbin! can I rip the Indian lift off and put a cup of lift powder on them - all same batch all same weight so that I get some shells to use? What weight of lift would you put under a 3" cylinder shell in grammes or as a proportion of the shell weight. These are about twice as tall as their 3" dia. The leader goes to the spollette (top fused) then as flat QM round the shell to the lift bag
NightHawkInLight Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 Sure, no problem at all using your own lift. I would go with ~ 1/12th the shell weight for a 3" can.
Bonny Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 As NightHawkInLight suggested 1/12 would be a good starting point. You could even try 1/10, it depends on your powder. If you have quite a few shells, try one as a test shell and then adjust if needed.

Lift Charge Amounts for Single Break Shells Shell Size Description Weight of 2FA lift 3" color or salute 1 oz 3" color and inserts 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 oz 4" color or salute 2 oz 4" color and inserts 2-1/2 oz 5" color or salute 3 to 3-1/2 oz 5" color and inserts 4 to 5 oz 6" color or salute 4 to 5 oz 6" color and inserts 4-1/2 to 6 oz 8" color 8 - 12 oz A rule of thumb frequently used for lift charge calculation is one ounce of 2FA for every pound of shell weight up to 10 lbs, and 1/2 oz of lift for each pound in excess of 10 lbs. The larger the shell is, the more factors such as mortar length, shell length and shell clearance come into play.

Maybe fill it with dry dogfood and add sand until you reach your target weight.

I understand your rational and I did the same thing in the beginning but I don't like the idea of doing round trips no matter what. Start with 1 oz and adjust from their. There is no sense in dropping a 6oz ball on your or the dogs head. D Edited February 9, 2010 by dagabu
