Pyro09 Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Hi, there are many comps out there which use lampblack. I've wondered where to get it , is the black dust out of my oilheating (out of the incineration camber) lampblack?Would be nice since the heating has to be cleaned every year and there is a lot of this black dust Greetings, Pyro09
TheSidewinder Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Google is your friend! I'll add this much: Plan on disposing of whatever clothing you're wearing when you work with it. If you're foolish enough to use a washing machine to wash them, anything you wash afterwards in it, will pick up the traces and be stained. If you're married, and value your male parts, do not bring lampblack, OR the clothes you wore to work with it, into the house. The crap stains everything it comes into contact with. I have a pound of it somewhere in the garage, and a garbage bag with a pair of coveralls in it that will never see the inside of my house.
Mumbles Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 That might work, but I put this up there with harvesting potassium nitrate from manure. Real messy, dirty, and a lot of work for something that can cost less than $2 per pound. If you have to climb in and do it anyway, it never hurts to try though. It is sold inexpensively in small quantities as a dry ink pigment. I can point you in the direction of a few suppliers if you want to get something to compare your homemade lampblack with.
Pyro09 Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 (edited) I've already googled this, sidewinder, but I wasn't sure whether my heating-lampblack is the same as the one wich is refered to in many comps!I didn't know that lampblack can be bought, could you name a supplier? TheSidewinder Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Skylighter and Firefox both sell it, last time I checked. "Good" lampblack is gathered by some specific method I don't remember offhand. Umm.... fuel-rich flame onto some type of collecting plate, iirc. It's still "oily", which is one reason why it stains so badly.
Mumbles Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 I've never tried these, so be aware. The first was recommended to me, so one would think that it would be okay. You have to buy 2.5kg to get it at a decent price though. A few have both carbon black and lamp black. In what little I know about this, lampblack is still oily as Sidewinder suggested, while carbon black likely has had this stuff washed out. http://shop2.chemassociates.com/shopsite/C...-lampblack.htmlhttp://www.graphicchemical.com/shopdisplay...at=Dry+Pigmentshttp://www.printmaking-materials.com/products/intaglio/231http://www.danielsmith.com/Item--i-284-030-040http://www.oldemill.com/store/index.php/cPath/21_45
gordohigh Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 I saw a 5 pound container in my local sewells hardware, (behind the counter with the concrete colors), and I think it was 8 bucks, way too cheap to ruin my clothes.

Traditionally (Mike Swisher speaking) lamp black is made by burning fat and capturing the carbon form the incomplete burning.(PF)
