Green Rocket Compositions

Recommended Posts

Well, there isn't another topic about this, and it's something that I really like and want to get working. I have tried the Zinc/Sulfur Rocket comp but have had no successful launches. I was curious if anyone else had any green rocket comps they'd like to share/discuss, or ideas for one.

~I was thinking about adding some zinc to a whistle composition. I presume it would be a nice green with the added help of the perchlorate as a minor chlorine donar. *since it burns a nice green with just sulfur* Any ideas?

Hmm... interesting... And no, I don't have any Barium Nitrate. I just ordered some chems too, shoulda got it... damn. I presume there's no OTC source?

This is promising... Zinc puts out a nice color without much of a chlorine donar. I just ran a few tests with adding zinc to a 65/35 sucrose rocket mix. The best results were

2g Rocket mix

1g Zinc

0.5g PVC

So rocket mix, then half that weight is the amount of zinc to add, and then half the metal weight is the amount of PVC. Burns pretty good, with a nice soft green. I'll give it a shot in a rocket tonight. letchyalls know.

I would like to add a word on Stoddard's red, green, and yellow rockets. I was at the crackerjack’s fall shoot last year. John Steinberg and Dave Stoddard were making green rockets for the first time. They are truly amazing! They made up 4lb greens with 3 or 4 inch lampari shells as headers. Amazing indeed. I have since made up 1 and 4lb versions of all the colors and would like to say they all work great. One word of warning, this past 4th I did a shoot for a party and the 4lb green with a 150 gram salute header blew on the launch pad! It is louder then any large 4-5 inch salute I have ever heard. These comps are forms of flash powder and should be handled with the utmost care.

Good luck,

You aren't kidding about these comps being flash worthy. I watched two 6lb. strobe rockets go up on the pad this past Saturday. Very loud with a hard concussion. I would not want to be very close to one of those KATO's. Thanks for the links optimus. Real good info there, I'm definately gonna try those. I will post the results as they become available.

Hey ActionTek have you tried the green comp yet? If you have any videos?

Yea, when the comp is burned in open air it has a soft green, a little greener than akwapo's star comp. However, when I put this in a motor and fired a static test, the green in the flame cone is almost completely washed out. I don't have any video's sorry.
