TrueBluePyro Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 What are the ratios? I'm using kno3/sulfur/al 50/30/20 as my booster and was wondering how much I should use in my paper ball shells which will be pasted in a few layers of gum tape. How much for; 2"3"4"5"6" If you use a different booster it might still be a good idea to say as it might help someone else, which is what a pyro forum is for,, helping pyro's . Cheers,TBP.

That will depend on who you ask. The amount of booster needed changes with the strength of your burst and the strength of your pasting. David Bleser in his book recommends using the same amount of booster regardless of shell size, as the amount of burst charge goes up with shell size anyway. For me , I simply add a spoonful of whistle (powder) to 3" and 5" shells that are pasted in well.
Pretty green flame Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 5/3/2 can be pretty forgiving as far as boosters go, so i'd be comfortable using 2 level teaspoons in a 3" and 3 teaspoons in a 4". If you were to use 70/30 made from german dark than you can quickly start breaking them too hard.
dagabu Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 I just add 5 grams of whistle to my 4:1 coated rice hulls for breaking 3" plastic balls shells. D
Arthur Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 With well pasted 4" and above you should not need booster if your BP is any good. For plastic hemis then yes maybe use a booster. However you will need to do tests to get the amount exactly right.
FREAKYDUTCHMEN Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 Yeah if you like pasting a lot, which I don't. The sound is also different.
Sambo Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 (edited) I extrapolated these amounts from the passfire article, they break hard with this much. I use 2/3 of the suggested amount below for a more traditional break, combined with 6 layers of gummed tape. 2" - 5g 3" - 7.5g 4" - 10g 5" - 15g 6" - 20g 7" - 30g 8" - 40g Edited December 23, 2009 by Sambo
pyrogeorge Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 i think that in bigger shells is to much.
ExplosiveCoek Posted December 24, 2009 Posted December 24, 2009 No it's not, you just have to use less layers of pasting then you are expecting. Which only sounds good to me . I guess those ratio's are for shell's broken with MCRH dusted with the slowflash. I use even 8 gram's of slowflash with 5 layers of pasting to break my 3'' shell's.
Sambo Posted December 25, 2009 Posted December 25, 2009 What type of aluminium are you using sambo? Indian blackhead, although I think bright flake would work well enough. Yes I use a mediocre bp on puffed rice as the filler.
vladou Posted December 25, 2009 Posted December 25, 2009 I personaly use 3g of whistle mix combined with meal coated rice hulls with 6 layers of gummed tape for 3" shells and 4g for 4" shells with 9 layers of pasting.
