z92 Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 (edited) Hello As I am sure you are all aware, new years is nearing. I am interested in doing a few salute rockets. I need to buy some rocket tooling, and I am wondering whether 1lb whistle rockets perform better or worse than 1lb BP rockets. I use spiral would tubes. Very sturdy stuff. I plan on making the salutes as big and heavy as the rockets thrust allows. I saw some 500g flash salutes on youtube, but that was 3lb rockets. Also, 500g is more than I'd want to waste on a single rocket. Not I would be scared of mixing such a portion. I am thinking more like 50-100g for my rockets. I know it's a lot, but they're for 24:00 as I would like to have something extraordinary for that time. So;Which performs better, BP (Cored) or Whistle (small core) in terms of lift-ability?How much would a 1lb BP/Whistle respectively be able to lift safely? My BP can be whatever quality, as I have a ballmill. Thank you very much in advance. P.S. I am concerned about safety, so the rockets are to be fired from a large field. Aquarius Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 A quick warning: If it is the FIRST time you try out rockets, start with BP and a lot smaller, say 4 oz (1/2 ").Even a BP one-pounder will make a hell of a bang, and your likely to make a lot of bangs before you dial them in...

I just have no clue at all how whistle rockets compare to BP. Oh and the reason I'm asking what 1LB can lift... Well, I'm too lazy to test it myself if I can get the information from someone else :-) Edited December 17, 2009 by z92
Sambo Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 (edited) Both 1lb bp and whistle will lift 50-100g easily. It depends if you want the noise from whistle or the tail from a nice bp rocketA 1lb bp rocket should be able to get a 4" shell to a respectable height, in my experience a 4" ball is about 300-400g. A good 1lb whistle should lift 500g+.I don't know how far you will be able to push those rockets though with the spiral tubing you are planning to use. Edited December 17, 2009 by Sambo
dagabu Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 While at PGI last summer, I witnessed a 1# BP core-burner lift a 6" ball shell to 400'. Yes, it had a deep core and hot fuel above to help the lift (it was a dare and he had to prove himself). I wouldnt try it myself, my rockets are much more calm but I lift 3" ball shells all the time with 1# BP cored rockets and they break around 250-300 feet before the motor is done since I like the way they break while still on the rise. I am way to new to comment on whistle, I have a long way to go on those but if you look at pyrobin, you will find gads of small rockets lifting lager payloads. It really depends on the "snort" of the rocket. As far as salutes go, 10 grams of vitamin-F is just fine for a good pop, 50 g will get a lot of attention from close neighbors and 100 g will likely get the quick attention of the cops. IMHO... D
firetech Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 I assume you're talking about core burning bp rockets. You're going to have a very tough time with endburners... If you have your whistle dialed in to maximum performance then it should definitely exceed bp.

dagabu Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 If you have a proven BP rocket worked out, just use it, w/as small of a salute that you can use- if you use flash at all. In my experience, the "ooh's and aah's" come mostly from a nice break, not a big *BANG*. Just MO. I just listen to my wife and kids when it comes to shells, they ohh and awww at palms, breaking glass and rockets with HUGE tails. Frankly, I leave the boomers to Dr. X. D
WonderBoy Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 Another issue with whistle rockets is that you need a press to make them. So if you don't have one, that is something else to consider.

Plasm7 Posted December 18, 2009 Posted December 18, 2009 if your not sure buy a set of hybrid rocket tooling. You can make both kinds.
