String/Twine for Spiking

Recommended Posts

I have a lead on some 48lb Hemp twine, price is 9 bucks /400ft roll, I have a coupon to get it for 5 bux, is it worth it? I can't find any flax twine anywhere I go. Until now I had been using cotton/jute twine and I'm not really satisfied with the results.

Do you guys know any good general brand stores or places to look for good spiking material? Not online please.

I have been using walmart hemp for a while and have been satisfied. Unless you're making 8" canisters, you will probably want to go with 20lb and double or triple up as needed.

I can't seem to find it on their site, Michaels also has the 20lb stuff and I've got a 50% off coupon, how much does Walmart sell it $/ft?

$5 for around 400ft the last time I checked. I couldn't find it on the website either, but it is in the Arts and Crafts section for making necklaces or something.

A 1 kilo roll can be had from Old Glory, to bad you don't do online stuff. It's a good 10 rools worth. The smaller of the two is the thin wall-world stuff, the larger is the old glory stuff.

I can help on this a little (i work for walmart, so im in there all the time) We do sell the hemp your looking for, But go to the hardwere section we have larger(and cheaper) rolls, I think Around $4.88 for 400ft or so, we also carry jute, and cotton, some synthetics. I would try the hardwhere section first, not only will you find larger rolls, but theres diffrent thicknesses also. Im working tommorrow, so i'll see the price/Ft, and types we offer.

Hope that helps

Flax twine is often used by butchers to close up sausages and so. I´d good success using flax.

Even if hemp for some reason is not mentioned by classic sources such as Fulcanelli, it´s said to be at least as strong as flax twine of the same diameter. Flax however seems to take up paste better, due to its rougher finish. Just my 2 cents...

I love flax (linen) twine, I am just to darn cheap to pay what they want for it. I tie up tomatoes, make necklaces with the kids, spike rose bushes, cone time fuse, tie off cross match etc with hemp, I use 10,000' a year and I just cant spend that much on flax.

What spiking string is recommended for a 3" or 4" Cannister? I was going to get the 4 rolls of 48 lb tested 325 feet each roll for $20 from Hobby Horse.

Is it possible to over compress the shell breaking the shell too hard?

I use 2 strands of that same hemp twine for 3s and up. I tried 2 strands of thinner cotton twine on a smaller 2" shell, but it either was not contained as well or needed a flash booster added to the break for what I wanted.

I don't use that strong of string on 3". I generally use 1 strand of 20lb hemp on 3" and below, and 2 strands of the same string for 4" to 6". I guess 1 strand of the 48lb would be fine for 4" and up. Two strands of 20lb was probably a little on the weak side for 6" though. I haven't used much heavier hemp in building. Don't mess with what's already working, right? I also enjoy the lower profile the thinner string leaves. This can make a difference in multibreaks. It never hurts to try that string of course. If you over contain a shell, it might turn into a salute or have an uneven break.

Ok, thanks Mumbles.

Does Walmart or Michaels sell 48 and 20?

Is it not ideal to use 48 on a 3"? Are the results better? Or are you saying that to try and save money.

In the past I have been using 2 strands of 1mm hemp that I bought from Bangkok Pyro. I started getting nervous about running out and not having anything to replace it, but was recently turned on to this stuff by Psyco: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0078PXU2A/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A36X2ZXMLCUT0Z

I got excited and bought 30 rolls :D It is pretty cheap, comes out to about $20 a kilo. It is just slightly thinner than Paul's 1mm hemp.

I have some 4" containment tests planned using 2 strands each of 1mm hemp, 1.5mm hemp, cotton, and rinfasciature using 1mm hemp. I am interested to see how they compare.

Thanks for that link. I might get a few rolls and try it out. I do like thinner twine for the reasons Mumbles mentioned.

After using such heavy hemp in the past, ~1.5-2mm, that small stuff just seems so little and weak. I guess with 2 strands and pasting it, there might be some strength, but I look and it and ponder if my shell with stay together. I still bought a good amount of those 400ft rolls, couldn't be a bad thing...gotta think years ahead of now, as you never know what supplies will be around.

I have to correct myself, I have the 20lb strength hemp twine from hobby horse.

I really like thinner twine. Especially since I have been using the rinfasciature method, I tend to have a fairly snug fit in the gun as it is. I have been using double strands of 1mm hemp on my 3-5" multi's with success.

Doubled up, it is surprisingly strong. I really put some tension on that string as I spike the shell and have only broken it once.

If nothing else, a single strand of thin twine is great for spiking insert shells.

Best part was when I added 20 rolls to my cart (just to see what shipping was) it was only $4.99 shipping for all 20 rolls! That makes it only $2.69 a roll delivered. Nice!

Colors cost more though!

Colors are also bleached and then dyed and probably wont be nearly as strong.

I use plastic bailing twine to tie up tomatoes. It's cheap. I use 15000' a year. I also use Sisel from Home Depot for canister shells.
