fireworks Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 Over the weekend I tried to make an exploding target to be shot with a rifle. A pouch of chlorate and sulfur (for the fire-starter when the bullet impacts) was taped onto a fuel cell (so the impact would be obvious). The idea was for the chlorate and sulfur to ignite when the bullet hit and then light the butane in the fuel cell that would be released when the bullet passed through there. The chlorate and sulfur went but it never ignited the butane. Ideas? Is the temperature of the combustion of chlorate and sulfur not hot enough to ignite butane? Or does it just detonate too quickly to ignite the butane?
KruseMissile Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 What do you mean by fuel cell? Like a lighter fuel thing?
Updup Posted December 7, 2009 Posted December 7, 2009 The butane in a lighter is too rich to burn in liquid state, it has to dissapate in to the air until it has enough oxygen to burn. What may have happend when you shot your target is that the chorate and sulfur burned up while the butane was dissapateing. If you want to see this happen, throw a cheap lighter into a fire (WARNING: DO THIS UNDER EXTREME CAUTION!) Make sure your away from anything flammable, and back wayyy up, you'll hear the hissing of the gas once the plastic has a hole in it, then a second or so later, Whoosh! Flame ball [=

Tannerite is much safer and is less static sensitive. You can use a very small amount of Tannerite for the detonator and use another fuel for the visual but using compressed gasses can lead to unexpected results. http://www.tannerite.com/ Keep safe, D Edited December 7, 2009 by dagabu
